live commentary

  • Over 27. 6 runs. Bowler: Kagiso Rabada. Pakistan: 119/3(rr 4.41)
  • 26.6

FOUR! Kagiso Rabada to Babar Azam. Half volley, off stump on the front foot driving, well timed past long on for 4 runs. A textbook on-drive from Babar beats the diving mid on fielder and trickles away for four. He checked his shot, did not try and hit it too hard, just timed it beautifully.

The umpires decide that it is raining too hard and the players go off. Pakistan still ahead of D/L.

A few hours of rain and the umpires have called it off. Pakistan get the vital two points to open up the group, and they fully deserved the victory with the way they played.

FOUR! Morne Morkel to Babar Azam. Short, outside off stump on the back foot cutting, well timed in the air under control past third man for 4 runs. Awful bowling from Morkel. Babar, like Malik earlier in the over, has room to carve the ball over backward point. One bounce four.

  • 24.2

FOUR! Kagiso Rabada to Shoaib Malik. Short, outside off stump on the back foot cutting, well timed in the air under control past deep cover for 4 runs. Hit me ball from Rabada. Very wide delivery for Malik to throw his hands at, and he thrashes it over the top for four.

APPEAL! Verified by umpire after REFERRAL. Imran Tahir to Babar Azam. Googly length ball, off stump on the front foot driving, bat-pad to short extra cover for no runs, fielded by de Kock, appeal made for L.B.W. Huge appeal for leg before, but there was a couple of noises on impact. That was enough for the umpire to shake his head, but South Africa decide to review. Replays show it was actually pad before bat, but ball tracking says it is going over the top!

  • 19.2

Wide Imran Tahir to Babar Azam. Quicker length ball, down leg side on the back foot glancing, Play and Miss (Leg Side) to wicketkeeper for 1 run, fielded by de Kock.

  • 18.6

FOUR! Chris Morris to Babar Azam. Short, outside off stump on the back foot hooking, well timed in the air under control past fine leg for 4 runs. Decent bouncer from Morris, but Babar intentionally goes fine with his shot, swaying inside the ball and helping it on it's way to the boundary.

  • Key events
  • 48.6

OUT! Caught. Khan to Rabada. Length ball, off stump on the front foot Slog, mis-timed in the air uncontrolled to deep extra cover, by Ali. Another hard swing from Rabada, but it doesn't get away with it this time. In the arc to be hit, but it comes right off the toe of the bat and goes swirling up in the skies. Wonderful catch from Hasan Ali running round from long off.

  • 48.2

That is 200 for South Africa off 295 balls.

  • 42.6

APPEAL! Verified by umpire after REFERRAL. Khan to Rabada. Yorker, middle stump no foot movement defending, to cover for 1 run, shy attempt by Khan, appeal made for L.B.W. This is right up there with the worst ever review taken. Junaid thinks the ball has brushed the toe before hitting the bat, but Rabada's feet are nowhere near. Straight off the middle of the blade.

  • 42.4

That is 50 for David Miller off 83 balls.

  • 42.3

OUT! Caught. Khan to Morris. Length ball, to leg on the front foot driving, mis-timed in the air uncontrolled to long on, by Ali. Big wicket for Pakistan. The tail are now in with seven overs still to go. Length ball and in the slot, but Morris shanks it down the throat of long on, who makes no mistake. Pakistan are hanging onto their catches today.

  • 39.6

APPEAL! OUT changed by umpire to NOT OUT after REFERRAL. Amir to Miller. Reverse Swing-In yorker, middle stump on the front foot flick, hit pad for no runs, appeal made for L.B.W. Firstly, it is an absolute jaffer from Amir. Tailed back into Miller at the toes, and it puts him on the floor as he tries to clip to leg. The umpire raises the finger for leg before, but it is reviewed. It does too much, swinging down past leg stump. Decision reversed, Miller is safe.

  • 28.6

OUT! Bowled. Ali to Parnell. Seaming away length ball, off stump on the front foot defending, missed. Incredible scenes. Hasan Ali is on fire. Pitched on off, a bit of nip away, Parnell tries to play through mid on and is beaten by quite a distance. The ball destroys the stumps. Carnage at Edgbaston. The Pakistan filled crowd go beserk.

  • 28.5

OUT! Caught. Ali to Duminy. Length ball, outside off stump no foot movement driving, outside edge to slips, fielded by Azam. The pressure is mounting onto South Africa now. Hasan Ali gets his second of the day, and has been outstanding so far. He draws Duminy into fishing outside his off stump, the foot movement is minimal, and an outside edge is pouched smartly by Babar at slip. Who saw this coming? Pakistan all over South Africa!

  • 25.3

That is 100 for South Africa off 156 balls.

  • 22.2

OUT! Bowled. Ali to du Plessis. Back of a length, outside off stump on the back foot driving, inside edge. The change back to seam has worked. Faf thinks the ball has kept a little low with how he played the shot. Wide delivery from Hasan Ali, that du Plessis goes after. He ends up reaching out, prodding with hard hands, and the ball cannons back onto the stumps off the inside edge. Faf is left crouched on the floor starting at where the ball pitched.

  • 14.4

OUT! Caught. Wasim to de Villiers. Stock length ball, outside off stump on the front foot driving, thick edge in the air uncontrolled to backward point, by Hafeez. AB goes first ball! He goes chasing a wide delivery, looking to get off the mark, and slices a drive into the hands of backward point. It wasn't the length to drive, a needless shot, and Pakistan are on a roll.

  • 13.6

OUT! L.B.W. Hafeez to de Kock. Off break length ball, off stump on the front foot sweeping, hit pad. He doesn't get away with this one! De Kock sweeps a straight one, doesn't make any contact, and is trapped in front of middle stump. Would have hit leg stump flush, so a good decision from the umpire. South Africa struggling against the spin.

  • 11.6

APPEAL! Hafeez to de Kock. Off break length ball, off stump on the front foot pushing, hit pad to gully for no runs, fielded by Ahmed, appeal made for L.B.W. Pakistan should've had their second, but they didn't review! Hafeez does de Kock in the flight, and the ball beats the inside edge to hit the back pad. Umpire shakes his head to the appeal, Sarfraz and bowler had a chat but decided against the review. Replays show all three reds on ball tracking. De Kock survives.

  • 8.2

OUT! L.B.W. Wasim to Amla. Stock ball back of a length, outside off stump moves in front working, hit pad. Big wicket for Pakistan! Amla goes back and across, wanting to nudge into the legside, but the ball skids past the inside edge and pins him right in front. Simple decision for the umpire.

  • 7.4

OUT! Caught. Morkel to Ali. Short, outside off stump on the back foot cutting, in the air uncontrolled to third man, by Tahir. What was Azhar Ali thinking? Third man in place, and he decides to give him catching pratice. Banged in with some width, and it is gently lifted down the throat of Tahir, who does a little roll on the floor to add some spice to the catch. Double strike for Morkel.

  • 7.2

OUT! Caught. Morkel to Zaman. Off cutter length ball, outside off stump no foot movement pushing, outside edge to slips, by Amla. An entertaining debut innings must come to an end. Morkel rolls his fingers across, it grips slightly and takes the outside edge of the bat. Fakhar was stood outside his leg stump and poked with hard hands, and the ball looped up to Amla at first slip.

  • 3.2

APPEAL! Khan to de Kock. Length ball, off stump on the front foot flick, hit pad to backward point for no runs, fielded by Khan, appeal made for L.B.W. A good start for Pakistan here. Big appeal for leg before, but turned down. Junaid nipping the ball back into the pads but it was doing too much.
