live commentary

  • Over 42. no runs. Bowler: Imran Tahir. Sri Lanka: 203/10(rr 4.83)
  • 41.3

OUT! Caught. Imran Tahir to Nuwan Pradeep. Leg spinner length ball, outside off stump on the front foot slog sweeping, mis-timed in the air uncontrolled to long on, by Duminy. Imran Tahir nips in with four wickets as Nuwan Pradeep holes out to long on, which is easily taken.

A convincing win in the end for the Proteas, but they would have been very worried after the first ten overs of the Sri Lankan innings. Niroshan Dickwella got them off to an absolute flyer, but then regular wickets fell and the Proteas gained control. The game was initially set up with a magical century from Hashim Amla, and South Africa managed the game superbly. A good win to start things off for them, but worrying signs for Sri Lanka, who only played well in spells.

  • 41.2

Imran Tahir to Nuwan Pradeep. Googly back of a length, outside off stump on the back foot Fended, to silly point for no runs, fielded by de Kock.

  • 41.1

  • Over 41. 9 runs. Bowler: Kagiso Rabada. Sri Lanka: 203/9(rr 4.95)
  • 40.6

FOUR! Kagiso Rabada to Kusal Perera. Half volley, to leg backing away driving, well timed past long off for 4 runs. Kusal drills it back down the ground to take Sri Lanka past 200. Powerful stroke.

  • 40.5

Kagiso Rabada to Kusal Perera. Short, down leg side backing away cutting, missed to wicketkeeper for no runs, fielded by de Kock.

  • 40.4

Kagiso Rabada to Nuwan Pradeep. Full toss, to leg on the front foot pushing, to deep cover for 1 run.

  • 40.3

FOUR! Kagiso Rabada to Nuwan Pradeep. Length ball, off stump backing away driving, well timed in the air under control past deep cover for 4 runs. Not a classic drive through the offside, as Pradeep uniquely prods the ball over the top to the cover boundary.

  • 40.2

Kagiso Rabada to Nuwan Pradeep. Short, off stump backing away hooking, missed to wicketkeeper for no runs, fielded by de Kock.

  • 40.1

  • 38.1

OUT! Bowled. Kagiso Rabada to Lasith Malinga. Short, outside off stump backing away cutting, bottom edge. Rabada is too good for Malinga, who is clearly not comfortable with the pace of the young man. He steps outside leg stump, wafts at the ball, and gets a thick bottom edge back onto his stumps.

  • Over 38. 1 run. Bowler: Chris Morris. Sri Lanka: 192/8(rr 5.05)
  • 37.6

Chris Morris to Lasith Malinga. Yorker, to leg on the front foot glancing, to fine leg for 1 run, fielded by Parnell.

  • 37.5

OUT! Run Out. Chris Morris to Suranga Lakmal. Back of a length, outside off stump on the back foot pulling, to mid on, direct hit by Tahir. Miscued to Tahir at mid on, Lakmal wanted the single and is told to go back, but it was too late. Incredibly, Tahir picks up and throws down the stumps at the striker's end. Sri Lanka are crumbling to defeat.

  • 37.4

Chris Morris to Suranga Lakmal. Back of a length, outside off stump on the back foot pushing, to short extra cover for no runs, fielded by de Villiers.

  • 37.3

Chris Morris to Suranga Lakmal. Length ball, outside off stump on the front foot driving, to mid off for no runs, fielded by Amla.

  • 37.2

OUT! L.B.W. Verified by umpire after REFERRAL. Chris Morris to Seekkuge Prasanna. Length ball, outside off stump on the front foot working, hit pad. Morris traps Prasanna in front to give South Africa a seventh wicket. He played all around it, with his head way outside the line of the ball, and it would've crashed into the stumps. A review taken by Sri Lanka, but the replays show that it was plumb.

  • 37.1

Chris Morris to Seekkuge Prasanna. Length ball, outside off stump on the front foot defending, to cover for no runs, fielded by de Villiers.

  • 36.3

FOUR! Kagiso Rabada to Kusal Perera. Short, down leg side on the back foot hooking, well timed in the air under control past fine leg for 4 runs. Good bouncer from Rabada, but Kusal responds well. A nice paddled hook shot gets the ball very fine, and it beats the fielder to the rope.

  • 35.2

SIX! Chris Morris to Seekkuge Prasanna. Length ball, outside off stump on the front foot Slog, well timed in the air under control over deep mid wicket for 6 runs. An agricultural hoick over the legside and it is an effective one. Right out the meat of the bat and Prasanna plants it over the ropes.

  • 33.4

Chris Morris to Kusal Perera. Length ball, outside off stump on the front foot pushing, to backward point for no runs, fielded by Duminy.

  • 33.3

FOUR! Chris Morris to Kusal Perera. Short, outside off stump on the back foot pulling, well timed past deep mid wicket for 4 runs. Kusal crashes a pull shot in front of square, thumping it away to the boundary in no time. Good effort in the outfield, but the sub couldn't pull it back.

  • Key events
  • 48.6

APPEAL! Malinga to Parnell. Off cutter length ball, off stump on the front foot Slog, top edge in the air uncontrolled to third man for 2 runs, fielded by Pradeep, appeal made for Run Out

  • 47.5

OUT! Run Out. Fernando to Morris. Half volley, outside off stump on the front foot driving, well timed to cover, direct hit by Tharanga. A crisp drive from Morris, straight to Tharanga on the edge of the circle at extra cover. The Sri Lanka skipper has one stump to aim at, and nails it. Morris out of the frame.

  • 42.3

OUT! Run Out. Gunaratne to Amla. Off cutter length ball, down leg side on the back foot working, to mid wicket for 1 run, fielded by Mendis, by Dickwella. Suicidal running from Amla. He nudges it into the legside and instantly wants two. Mendis comes charging in from the deep and fires it into the keeper's gloves. A full length dive from Amla wasn't enough as he was well short. Big misjudgment.

  • 41.4

OUT! Caught. Lakmal to Miller. Short, down leg side down the track pulling, top edge in the air uncontrolled to third man, by Prasanna. Good bowling from Lakmal. Miller charges at him, so the fast bowler cramps him for room to give him nothing to work with. Miller cannot adjust his shot, and gets a big top edge that flies down to third man, who takes it comfortably.

  • 41.3

That is 100 for Hashim Amla off 113 balls.

  • 36.4

That is 205 for South Africa off 226 balls.

  • 34.4

OUT! Caught. Prasanna to de Villiers. Leg spinner back of a length, off stump on the back foot pulling, leading edge in the air uncontrolled to short extra cover, by Kapugedera. De Villiers quickly comes and goes. He wanted to hit out from ball one, and he ends up lobbing up a catch for extra cover. A touch short from the leg spinner, and AB tries to pounce on it by whacking it over mid wicket. He's through the shot too early though, and the ball spoons up off the leading edge to Kapugedera.

  • 33.4

OUT! Caught. Fernando to du Plessis. Short, outside off stump on the back foot pulling, to mid wicket, by Chandimal. Faf goes now. This bouncer from Pradeep gets up high and he cannot keep it down. Should of perhaps tried to go over the top, as he ended up dragging it into the hands of short mid wicket. Sharp catch from Chadimal in the ring. Just what Sri Lanka needed.

  • 29.2

OUT! Caught. Tahir to Gunaratne. Leg spinner length ball, outside off stump on the front foot driving, mis-timed in the air uncontrolled to cover, by Parnell. Tahir is tearing through the Sri Lankan middle order. He beats Gunaratne in the flight, who drives at a ball that wasn't there to. It scews off the outer half of the bat and spoons up to the cover fielder. Terrific bowling.

  • 27.1

That is 50 for Faf du Plessis off 54 balls.

  • 25.2

OUT! Caught. Tahir to Tharanga. Googly half volley, outside off stump on the front foot driving, in the air uncontrolled to deep cover, by Miller. Tahir picks up his second. Tossed up outside off stump, and Tharanga tries to loft it over extra cover. Instead, he picks out Miller who is sweeping the offside boundary, and he takes a simple catch. Sliced it slightly which meant the ball went squarer than he would've liked. Big mountain to climb for Sri Lanka now.

  • 21.6

That is 50 for Upul Tharanga off 63 balls.

  • 21.6

That is 50 for Hashim Amla off 56 balls.

  • 21.5

That is 101 for South Africa off 135 balls.

  • 20.5

APPEAL! Duminy to Tharanga. Off break half volley, down leg side on the front foot sweeping, Play and Miss (Leg Side) to wicketkeeper for no runs, by de, appeal made for Stumped For some reason the umpire has decided to go upstairs for the stumping review, but Tharanga has both feet in hte crease when the bails are removed. Waste of time really.

  • 17.5

OUT! L.B.W. Tahir to Kapugedera. Googly length ball, outside off stump on the front foot working, hit pad. First ball duck for Kapugedera. Tahir flings down a googly, it isn't picked, and the front pad is planted right across the stumps. The ball spins past the inside edge, thuds into the shin and the umpire to raises the finger. Tahir making things happen in his very first over.

  • 17.2

OUT! Run Out. Tahir to Chandimal. Leg spinner half volley, off stump on the front foot driving, to mid off, direct hit by de. Another moment of brilliance from de Villiers. Incredible direct hit. Chandimal nudges it to hit right hand side at extra cover, and wants to pinch a quick single. AB gets to the ball quickly and throws off balance, but still naills the stumps to leave the Sri Lankan short.

  • 16.2

Dropped Catch! Fernando to du Plessis. Short, outside off stump down the track hooking, top edge in the air uncontrolled to fine leg for 2 runs, dropped catch by Malinga. Big moment in the game. Pradeep should have had his second. Malinga makes a simple chance look extremely difficult. Faf charges down and is surprised by the bumper, so just flaps at the ball. It flies off a top edge down to the veteran at fine leg, and he completely misjudges it. He ends up having to dive forward to take the catch, but can only get fingertips to it.

  • 15.6

That is 100 for Sri Lanka off 102 balls.

  • 12.1

OUT! Caught. Fernando to de Kock. Length ball, off stump on the front foot defending, outside edge to wicketkeeper, by Dickwella. Breakthrough for Sri Lanka. They've deserved a wicket with the way they have bowled. Excellent line and length from Pradeep, making de Kock feel for the ball away from his body. The ball kisses the outside edge and is neatly taken by Dickwella diving to his left.

  • 11.5

OUT! Caught. Morris to Mendis. Length ball, outside off stump on the front foot flick, mis-timed in the air uncontrolled to mid wicket, by de. AB plucks it out the air one handed! Mendis mis-hits his shot and chips the ball in the air to mid wicket. De Villiers nonchalantly jumps up and grabs it one handed like it was the easiest catch in the world. Top cricket.

  • 8.2

OUT! Caught. Morkel to Dickwella. Length ball, outside off stump on the front foot Slog, top edge in the air uncontrolled to third man, by Parnell. He has got his side off to a good start, but Dickwella has to go. An ugly heave across the line, and the ball flies down to third man off a thick edge, where is it pouched comfortably. The Proteas needed that to stem the flow of runs.

  • 4.2

Dropped Catch! Rabada to Dickwella. Half volley, down leg side backing away driving, well timed back to bowler for no runs, dropped catch by Rabada. Put down again by Rabada off his own bowling! This one was much tougher though. Sometimes they stick, sometimes they don't. Crushed back to him by Dickwella, and he hangs out a left hand, but it bounces off the palm to safety.

  • 3.1

APPEAL! Verified by umpire after REFERRAL. Lakmal to de Kock. Back of a length, to leg on the back foot working, hit pad to backward point for no runs, fielded by Kapugedera, appeal made for L.B.W. De Kock is stuck on the crease and trapped on the back leg. Huge appeal from the Sri Lankan's, but Aleem Dar shakes his head. Tharanga decides to review, and it was a mighty close one. Pitched in line, impact in line, but it was umpire's call on height when hitting the stumps. Fair enough decision from the umpire in the end.

  • 2.2

Dropped Catch! Rabada to Tharanga. Short, down leg side on the back foot pulling, mis-timed back to bowler for no runs, dropped catch by Rabada. Rabada drops a dolly off his own bowling! Tharanga is cramped for room on the pull, and pops the ball back to the fast bowler. Rabada couldn't ask for a simpler return catch, but he spills it.
