Though it was alleged that the constables -- Suhel Ahmed, Layek Ahmed and Sonpal -- were a part of the state’s ‘anti-Romeo’ squads, senior police officials have categorically denied it.

Some onlookers, including one of the constables, also recorded videos of the incident, which were later circulated on Whatsapp.

Based on one of the videos, senior superintendent of police (SSP) of Shahjahanpur, KB Singh, suspended the constables for failing to stop the incident. He also ordered a circle officer to investigate the matter.

“The constables have been asked to shift to reserve police lines till the investigation is completed,” he said.

Besides, an inquiry has been ordered against the in-charge of Azizganj police post, KK Chaudhary, who allegedly tried to hush up the matter, Singh said.

Kasim, who is enrolled in the final year of BBA at a private college, said, “One of my female batchmates had asked me for a ride to her house from college. I asked her to sit pillion and drove towards her residence.”

He said they were intercepted by some men near South City colony of Aziznagar. “The men asked our names and separated us. My friend was asked to leave as they huddled around me. Then, they tied my hands behind my back with a plastic string and started beating me,” said Kasim.

The three constables stood there watching without doing anything to intervene.

“The men punched and kicked me and later called a barber to shave off my head. I asked them what my mistake was and pleaded for mercy but they didn’t listen,” added Kasim.

The episode continued for 30 minutes. “When my head had been shaved, the cops took me to the police post and challaned me under section 151 (joining or continuing in assembly of five or more after commanded to disperse),” said Kasim.

The Yogi Adityanath government has issued clear directions to police and administration to ensure that youngsters are not troubled unnecessarily in the name of curbing eve-teasing and action is taken against self-proclaimed ‘anti-Romeo’ squads indulging in moral policing.
