The azaan is an essential part of namaz but not loudspeakers, Congress leader Ahmed Patel said on Tuesday.

The senior Congress leader’s comments a day after singer Sonu Nigam triggered a controversy, complaining about loudspeakers being used to call Muslims to prayer.

Muezzins, the people who lead prayers, across the world issue the call five times a day, mostly over a public address system.

“Azaan is an essential ingredient for Namaz. In today’s day of modern technology, loudspeakers aren’t,” Patel tweeted on Tuesday.

Nigam’s series of tweets split public opinion but it also opened a debate on the use of loudspeakers by various religious groups, adding to noise pollution.
