While two CRPF constables waded through the stream to catch hold of the girl, the others ran downstream as a second line of defence in case the first two jawans could not catch her.

Five CRPF personnel on Monday rescued an 14-year-old girl from drowning in a stream at Kunzer Tangmarg in North Kashmir.

The girl slipped into the stream while she was washing clothes and was washed away by the strong currents. As she started crying for help, CRPF jawans from a neighbouring camp jumped into the stream and pulled her out.

News agency ANI tweeted a video of the incident.

A video of the incident, which has since gone viral, shows two of the personnel jumping into the stream to catch the girl and the rest running down the stream.

The jawans that jumped into the stream, M G Naidu and N Upendra, were able to rescue the girl, news agency PTI quoted officials as saying.

The two constables belong to the 176th battalion of the CRPF, officials said.

CRPF Director General R R Bhatnagar has declared that the two men will be awarded the DG commendation disc for their “selfless devotion to duty and exemplary act of saving the life of the girl”, officials told PTI.

The girl was later taken to local hospital where doctors declared her out of danger.

Meanwhile, the locals in the area have appreciated the fforts of the personnel after seeing the video.

“The five jawans jumped into fast currents of nullah and saved the girl. Had they (jawans) not taken the risk, the girl would have lost her life. It was brave attempt from CRPF personnel for which entire area is appreciating them,’’ said Abdul Rashid, a resident who witnessed the rescue of the girl by CRPF personnel.
