Delhi, meanwhile, has turned into a fortress for the two-day conclave; though there is no ‘lockdown,’ certain services, including delivery of online orders, will be prohibited in the city's New Delhi district from September 8-10. Also, while Delhi Metro services will function normally, the Supreme Court (earlier known as Pragati Maidan) station will be shut on the same three dates.

Additionally, while leaders such as Joe Biden, Rishi Sunak, and Justin Trudeau, among others, will attend the summit, Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping will not. Russia and China will be, therefore, represented by their foreign minister and prime minister, respectively.

G20 Summit 2023 Live Updates: What would be Biden's focus during this meet?

The key focus areas for President Joe Biden at the G20 Summit include delivering for developing nations, making progress on key issues like climate, technology and reshaping the multilateral development banks, the White House has said, expressing hope that the bloc will be able to make headway on those topics under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership.

On Thursday, President Biden will travel to New Delhi to attend the G20 Leaders’ Summit. On Friday, President Biden will participate in a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Modi and on Saturday and Sunday, the President will participate in the official sessions of the G20 Summit.

As Biden heads to the G20, he is committed to working with emerging market partners to deliver big things together, National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said during a press briefing on Tuesday.

"That’s what we believe the world will see in New Delhi this weekend," he said.

America's commitment to the G20 has not wavered, and it hopes the G20 Summit in New Delhi will show that the world’s major economies can work together even in challenging times, Sullivan said.

"So, as we head into New Delhi, our focus is going to be on delivering for developing countries; making progress on key priorities for the American people, from climate to technology; and showing our commitment to the G20 as a forum that can actually, as I said before, deliver," he said.

"And thanks to the leadership of Prime Minister Modi and India’s presidency, we hope we’ll be able to do all of those things," Sullivan said.

On what the US is bringing to the table at the summit, Sullivan said one of America's main focuses heading into the G20 is delivering on an agenda of fundamentally reshaping and scaling up the multilateral development banks, especially the World Bank and the IMF.

"We know that these institutions are some of the most effective tools that we have for mobilising transparent, high-quality investment into developing countries. And that’s why the United States has championed the major effort that is currently underway to evolve these institutions so that they are up to the challenges of today and tomorrow," he said.

G20 Summit 2023 Live Updates: What PM Modi says on India's approach to this meet

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reiterated a “firm belief in cooperative federalism and bipartisanship” when it comes to national interest and said that the same spirit can be seen in the country’s G20 presidency too.

In an interview with CNBC TV18’s moneycontrol.com ahead of the meeting of heads of the governments and states of the intergovernmental forum G20 in New Delhi over the weekend, Modi referred to a certain reluctance historically in the power circles to think beyond Delhi for hosting national and international meets. He added this may have been due to convenience or lack of confidence in the people.

Modi said the visits of foreign leaders would be restricted to mainly the national Capital or a couple of other places. “Having witnessed the capabilities of the people and the wonderful diversity of our country, I developed a different perspective. So, our government has worked on changing the approach since day one. I have hosted several engagements with global leaders around the country.” Read more

G20 Summit 2023 Live Updates: Xi-Putin skipping meet has nothing to do with India, says Jaishankar

China's President Xi Jinping and Russia's Vladimir Putin skipping this week's G20 summit in New Delhi is not unusual and has nothing to do with India, Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar told the ANI news agency.

Sherpas of the G20 countries are negotiating to build a consensus and arrive at a declaration at the Sept. 9-10 summit in New Delhi, Jaishankar said in the interview, which was aired on Wednesday.

"No, no. I do not think it has anything to do with India," he told ANI, in which Reuters has a minority stake, when asked if Putin and Xi are skipping the summit because they are miffed with India.

"I think whatever decision they make, I mean they would know best. But I would not at all see it the way you would suggest," he said.

Asked if their absence would affect building a consensus and producing a declaration at the end of the summit, Jaishankar said: "We are negotiating right now...the clock did not start ticking yesterday." (ANI)

G20 Summit 2023 Live Updates: PM felt G20 should be treated as a national endeavour, says Jaishankar

“If somebody felt that they were most comfortable in Lutyens' Delhi or completely comfortable in Vigyan Bhawan - that is their prerogative. So, yes you have had Summit meetings where the impact of the country probably went 2 kilometres, on a good day, out of Vigyan Bhawan,” says external affairs minister S Jaishankar.

The PM, however felt that, and all of us have worked in that direction, that the G20 is something that should be treated as a national endeavour, that different parts of India must have a sense of participation and that this is something which has been truly non-partisan: S Jaishankar
