India is progressing and is considered among the fastest growing economy today because of the decisions taken by the Narendra Modi government, which work well for the people but are not populist, BJP national president Amit Shah said Friday.

“Our government does not take decisions, which look good but takes those, which work well for people,” Shah said.

Addressing a Prabudhjan Sammelan (intellectuals’ meet) here on the first day of his three-day visit to Rajasthan, Shah said, “The BJP government has never faced any allegations of scam. Some controversies were created on demonetisation and GST but we are not afraid of taking decisions that are good for people”.

“Since 70s, three pests had been damaging the democratic framework - dynasty politics, casteism and appeasement. BJP has uprooted all three. Our Prime Minister Narendra Modi believes in transformation and not reforms. Over the last three years, the Centre has brought 106 new schemes covering all sections of the society,” Shah said.

He claimed that when Atal Bihari Vajayee was prime minister, the GDP growth had reached 8.8%. “It came down to 4.4% under UPA government, but has now reached 7.2% under a government run by the son of a tea maker,” Shah said.

“The journey from 4.4% to 7.2% is the difference between Congress and BJP,” he said. “Before buying an earthern vessel, we knock at it to check if it is sound. People should do the same before handing the reigns of the nation to a party.”

The BJP president suggested three points on which people should judge a political part: Is there internal democracy; does it walk the talk of its principles; and how does party government works.

He said more than 1,650 political parties are registered with the Election Commission, but only the BJP and, to a certain extent, the Communists, have upheld internal democracy. “All the other parties have dynasties,” he said.

“Can anyone say who will succeed me as the BJP President? But in Congress, anyone can predict who will become the president after Soniaji,” he said, adding that the Congress chief will be appointed by virtue of being born in a particular family.

He said the BJP was the only party where decisions were taken based on principles. “I am the only one in my family in politics. I started as a worker and am now the party president. Another person, born in a poor family, is our PM.”

He added: “Because of BJP government’s policies, Rajasthan is out of BIMARU states... Soon you will see Uttar Pradesh coming out of BIMARU as now we have a BJP government there.”

Chief minister Vasundhara Raje praised Shah for taking the party ahead. She said that there was a time when BJP had just two MPs, but today “sun rises and sets in the BJP”.

She also highlighted the achievements of her government. “We had promised 15 lakh jobs in five years, of which one lakh government jobs and employment opportunities to 10 lakh have been provided.”
