Oppn names Margaret Alva as Vice President candidate

Former Union minister and governor Margaret Alva will be the opposition's candidate for the upcoming vice-presidential election, senior leaders announced on Sunday. While 18 political parties supported Alva's candidature at a meeting held at Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar's residence, Trinamool Congress party, the second-largest opposition force in Parliament, was conspicuous in its absence. Some leaders proposed former chief election commissioner SY Qureshi's name. At this stage, one of senior leaders suggested Qureshi's name.

Veteran Telugu actor, former parliamentarian J Jamuna passes away

Veteran Telugu film actor and former parliamentarian J Jamuna passed away at Jamuna's residence in Hyderabad after a brief illness due to age-related issues, her family members said. Her a professor of zoology in Osmania University, husband Juluri Ramana Rao, died in November 2014. Before that Jamuna acted in several stage plays on behalf of Indian People's Theatre Association floated by Raja Rao. Jamuna shot into fame with her role in LV Prasad's Missamma (1955).

After taking blessings of his parents and paying floral tributes to his grandfather and TDP-founder late N T Rama Rao at NTR Ghat at Tank Bund on Wednesday, Lokesh flew down to Kadapa where he performed special prayers at the famous “pedda dargah”, Lord Lakshmi Venkateshwara temple and Roman Catholic Church at Mariyapuram. He had the darshan of Lord Venkateshwara at Tirumala in the early hours of Thursday before going to Kuppam.

Against the backdrop of differences between the Telangana government and the Raj Bhavan over protocol and other issues, Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan on Thursday said she would work for the state's people though some may not like her. She was speaking after unfurling the National Flag at the Raj Bhavan as part of the Republic Day celebrations. Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao did not attend the event. Everyone should have equal share in development, Soundararajan said.

Chhattisgarh CM announces unemployment allowance for youth from next financial year

In a major announcement ahead of the Chhattisgarh Assembly polls due this year-end, Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel on Thursday said unemployed youth will be given a monthly allowance in the state from the next financial year. It was one of the key promises made by the Congress ahead of the 2018 Assembly polls, following which the party returned to power in the state after a gap of 15 years.

R-Day 2023: Culture Ministry showcases ‘Devi Shakti’ and ‘Naari Shakti’

The Union ministry of culture presented a shakti-rupe-sanskritam tableau that captured the power of Devi (the female goddess) for the 74th Republic Day celebrations and organised a dance performance by 479 artistes from across the country showcasing Nari Shakti (women' power). The artistes were chosen through a nationwide 'Vande Bharatam' dance competition. The ministry last year launched the 'Vande Bharatam' Nritya Utsav' commemorating 75 years of Independence under the banner of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.”

President Droupadi Murmu led her maiden Republic Day celebrations at Kartavya Path and unfurled the national flag. The flag hoisting was followed by a rendition of the national anthem and a 21-gun salute. The 74th Republic Day parade was flagged off after President Murmu received the 21-gun salute. President Murmu was accompanied by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El –Sisi as they departed from the Rashtrapati Bhavan to attend the Republic Day celebrations at Kartavya Path.

PM congratulates Padma awardees, says ‘India cherishes their rich contributions’

The awards are conferred in three categories, namely, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri, with Padma Vibhushan being the highest honour among the three. This year, tabla maestro Zakir Hussain and Samajwadi Party founder Mulayam Singh Yadav were among the six Padma Vibhushan awardees. Sudha Murty and Kumar Mangalam Birla were among the nine awardees of Padma Bhushan. The awards are announced on the eve of Republic Day every year.
