The Supreme Court on Tuesday pulled up the Centre for not making any progress on a suggestion to unclutter jails and courts by releasing those involved in petty offences. The Court suggested a national policy to identify first-time offenders and those who have already served half their sentence, and directed the Centre to arrange an interaction with states to discuss the feasibility of the suggestion.
Gujarat Police has arrested Malini Patel, wife of the alleged conman Kiran J Patel, for a cheating case registered against them by a former Gujarat minister's brother. The Patels had allegedly promised to return Rs 35 lakh for renovating a bungalow, but later filed a civil suit claiming ownership of it. They are also accused of fraudulently renting out cars to a temple.

Supreme Court refused to entertain petition by gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed alleging threat to his life from UP police. Allowed him to withdraw and file petition before Allahabad High Court, as Ahmed was under arrest in connection with a kidnapping and murder case. Prayagraj court convicted Ahmed in connection with 2007 kidnapping case of a lawyer, sentencing him to life imprisonment. UP police brought Ahmed from Gujarat to Prayagraj on Monday.
In a joint inspection by central and state regulators, 76 pharma companies were inspected and 18 had their licences cancelled for producing substandard and adulterated drugs. Show-cause notices were issued to 26 firms, with 203 firms identified in total, mostly from Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Madhya Pradesh. Questions have been raised about the quality of drugs made in India following a recall in the US and children's deaths in the Gambia and Uzbekistan last year.

Government formed committee on digital competition law to check anti-competitive practices by big tech firms. Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman said inquiries against Amazon, Flipkart, Zomato, Swiggy, BookMyShow, Apple, WhatsApp, Facebook (Meta) and Google are being conducted. Terms of reference of committee include reviewing existing provisions in Competition Act, 2002 and need for ex-ante regulatory mechanism for digital markets.
