Eight people died in a massive car explosion near Delhi's Red Fort on Monday evening, while 20 others sustained injuries. The Delhi Fire Services said it received a call regarding the explosion, near the Lal Qila Metro Station Gate No 1, at around 7 pm. The blast took place in a car near Delhi's Red Fort on Monday evening. Several other vehicles also caught fire and sustained damage in the explosion. The area was cordoned off following the explosion.
In a briefing after the explosion, union home minister Amit Shah said that a Hyundai i20 car had exploded at the Subhash Marg traffic signal. Shah said that the incident was being investigated by top agencies “taking all possibilities into account”, adding that the results will be presented before the public.
Shah said that teams from the Delhi Crime Branch and Delhi Special Branch arrived at the spot within 10 minutes of receiving the information. He said that the NSG and NIA teams, along with the forensic department, had begun a thorough probe and all CCTV cameras near the site were being checked.
PM Modi takes stock, speaks to HM Shah
Prime Minister Narendra Modi took stock of the situation and spoke to union home minister Amit Shah regarding the situation. “Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones in the blast in Delhi earlier this evening. May the injured recover as soon as possible. Those affected are being assisted by authorities,” PM Modi said in a post on X.
Shah had earlier spoken to Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha, as reported by the ANI news agency. The home minister is also in regular contact with the Intelligence Bureau director.
Teams from the National Security Guard (NSG), National Investigation Agency (NIA) and the forensic department also reached the site of the incident. A team from the special cell of the Delhi police and the DIG CRPF have also arrived at the site of the explosion to assess the damage caused.
What did Delhi police commissioner say?
Delhi police commissioner Satish Golcha said that a “slow-moving vehicle stopped at the red light” at around 6.52 pm near the Red Fort. “An explosion happened in that vehicle, and due to the explosion, nearby vehicles were also damaged. All agencies, FSL, NIA, are here...” Golcha said.
The commissioner further said that the situation is constantly being monitored, adding that union home minister Shah also contacted the cops, and information is being shared with him regularly.
Which states are on high alert?
Some states, including Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Uttarakhand, poll-bound Bihar, Punjab and Haryana, have been put on high alert following the explosion. Apart from this, all railway stations have been put on precautionary alert, while the Chandni Chowk market in Delhi will be closed tomorrow.
The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) on Monday said that the Delhi metro, government buildings, the Indira Gandhi International Airport, and all such installations secured by the CISF have been put on high alert. “The situation is being constantly monitored and personnel are on standby,” the CISF said.
All police units in Gujarat have been placed under high alert, with the DGP asking them to step up patrolling, and security in Tamil Nadu has also been strengthened.
