A man allegedly murdered his 19-year-old daughter and her boyfriend after finding them talking to each other in Uttar Pradesh’s Mahoba district on Monday morning, police said.

Moolchand Ahirwar, a resident of the district’s Kulpahar region, was arrested after the murder and reportedly told police he killed the couple to save the honour of his family.

Geeta Ahirwar, his daughter, was to be married this Saturday. Geeta and Sunil, a resident of Ajnar, had met last year in Deobanda of Jhansi where their close relatives are next-door neighbours, police said.

Sources said Moolchand had fixed Geeta’s marriage after learning about their relationship and warned Sunil not to pursue his daughter.

But Sunil arrived on Sunday night when Moolchand was away in his field. Early on Monday morning, he found his daughter and Sunil talking, police said.

Moolchand picked up the axe and allegedly hacked both of them to death. Circle officer Kulpahar Vinod Singh said Moolchand was nabbed by villagers who handed him over to police. Police have recovered the murder weapon found in the room.
