Vice President election 2025 LIVE: Union Minister Kiren Rijiju on Tuesday claimed that many Opposition MPs had voted in favour of the NDA vice-presidential candidate CP Radhakrishnan, who won the election, defeating the INDIA bloc candidate Justice B Sudershan Reddy.

Radhakrishnan received 452 first preference votes, whereas Reddy received 300 first preference votes. Fifteen votes were considered invalid.

A total of 98.20 per cent voter turnout was recorded in the Vice Presidential elections, wherein 767 MPs cast their vote out of 781.

"The election of the Vice President is conducted in a free and fair manner, voting takes place with secrecy, and many opposition MPs have also voted for CP Radhakrishnan, which shows that the MPs have voted by listening to the voice of their conscience," Rijiju told reporters.

"I thank all the NDA MPs and the opposition MPs who voted for CP Radhakrishnan," he added. (ANI)

“About 40 MPs” belonging to the opposition camp supported the NDA’s vice presidential candidate Radhakrishnan, “listening to their conscience”, he said.

“I humbly accept this outcome with an abiding faith in the democratic processes of our great Republic. This journey has been a profound honour, offering me the opportunity to stand for the values that have guided my life constitutional morality, justice, and the dignity of every individual. Though the result is not in my favour, the larger cause we have collectively sought to advance remains undiminished. Congress MP Jairam Ramesh said that the Opposition stood united for the Vice Presidential election.

"Its performance has undeniably been most respectable. Its joint candidate Justice (retd) B. Sudershan Reddy secured 40% of the vote. In 2022, the Opposition had received 26% of the vote in the Vice Presidential Elections. The BJP's arithmetical victory is really both a moral and political defeat. The ideological battle continues undiminished," he wrote on X.

Amit Shah took to X and congratulated CP Radhakrishnan on being elected as the Vice President of India. He wrote, “I firmly believe that your sagacity as a leader who has risen from the grassroots of the society and profound knowledge about administration will help us in bringing out the best in our parliamentary democracy to serve the marginalised. I extend my warmest wishes to you for your journey as the custodian of the sanctity of the Upper House.”

Vice President election 2025 LIVE: The ruling BJP-led NDA's candidate CP Radhakrishnan's election on Tuesday as the Vice President of India does not carry a surprise. Numbers were already stacked up for him. But it sends out key signals that go far beyond New Delhi and the now.

His personality and history have much to do with it.

Radhakrishnan's win underscores a renewed southward foray of the BJP in choosing a Tamil Nadu leader for the post, as the state goes to polls next year. Plus, the party has chosen lifelong loyalty in RSS veteran Radhakrishnan, which means a clean break from someone like Jagdeep Dhankhar who had a winding political career.
