  • Over 103. 1 run. Bowler: Ravichandran Ashwin. Sri Lanka: 299/5(rr 2.90)
  • 102.6

Ravichandran Ashwin to Niroshan Dickwella. Off break back of a length, outside off stump on the back foot cutting, to deep cover for 1 run, fielded by Sharma.

Handshakes all round. Sri Lanka have done it, they batted the whole day while only losing two wickets to save the Test even though they were behind the eight ball for the majority of the game. Great fight from the visitors on what has been a tough tour. Credit has to go to Dhananjaya de Silva who scored an unbeaten 119 while Roshen Silva, on debut, finished with a maiden half century.

Virat Kohli though will rue the opportunity to not be able to finish off the game and on another occasion they might have declared earlier. On that note though the pitch was very placid so it might not have made a difference in the end.

Both teams now turn their heads to the ODI series which starts on Sunday. Join us then.

  • Key events
  • 135.3

OUT! Caught. Sharma to Chandimal. Back of a length, outside off stump on the back foot cutting, top edge in the air uncontrolled to third man, by Dhawan.

A flash from Chandimal outside the off stump and the top edge flies all the way down to the fielder at third man. The captain finishes with a career best 164 but India still take a lead of 163 into their second innings. All four bowlers chipped in with wickets with Ishant finishing with 3-98 after that last scalp.

  • 130.4

That is 150 for Dinesh Chandimal off 345 balls.

  • 126.5

OUT! L.B.W. Verified by umpire after REFERRAL. Jadeja to Gamage. Stock length ball, off stump on the front foot defending, hit pad. Sri Lanka lose their ninth wicket. Jadeja spears one towards the stumps and smacks the front pad. Hopeful review from Gamage and it's not going to be overturned. Three reds on Hawk-Eye.

  • 125.3

OUT! L.B.W. Verified by umpire after REFERRAL. Sandakan to Kohli. Chinaman length ball, outside off stump on the back foot defending, hit pad. Virat's long vigil is over. He falls LBW for 243 and misses out on a triple century. Sandakan spins it back into the pads from around the wicket and Kohli is unable to get his bat down in time. A hopeful review but the decision is going to stand.

  • 123.1

APPEAL! Sandakan to Kohli. Chinaman length ball, outside off stump down the track driving, to long on for 1 run, fielded by Sandakan, fielded by Karunaratne, appeal made for Run Out Drilled back at the bowler who deflects it unwillingly back onto the stumps. Saha has the bat in the correct hand though and he is able to get back.

  • 122.4

OUT! Caught. Shami to Lakmal. Length ball, outside off stump no foot movement defending, outside edge to wicketkeeper, by Saha. Cracking delivery from Shami. Extra pace which pushes Lakmal back and the feet go nowhere. He gets a healthy edge and Saha takes another stunning grab diving to his right.

  • 122.4

OUT! Caught. Gamage to Ashwin. Back of a length, outside off stump on the front foot pushing, outside edge in the air uncontrolled to gully, by Perera. A long delay but it works out for Sri Lanka. Ashwin has to set himself again but he has a flirt outside the off stump and edges the ball straight to gully. That's one way of getting off the field.

  • 119.2

OUT! Bowled. Ashwin to Dickwella. Arm length ball, outside off stump on the back foot cutting, missed. Too close to cut. Dickwella goes back to a ball which is angling in and a touch flatter. His off stump is uprooted and Ashwin has his third. India are having a superb final session.

  • 119.2

That is 500 for India off 723 balls.

  • 117.5

OUT! Caught. Verified by umpire after REFERRAL. Sandakan to Sharma. Chinaman length ball, outside off stump moves in front Late Cut, bottom edge to wicketkeeper, by Dickwella.

Rohit falls on the last ball before lunch. Once again he was having to stretch out to reach it but on this occasion he couldn't get the desired connection. Snicko shows the ball coming straight off the toe so India lose their first review.

Other than that India have dominated the morning session with 129 runs coming and Kohli reaching his sixth Test double century. He looks to be struggling with a twinge in his back but that isn't going to stop him, especially with 300 on the cards. Sri Lanka will be glad to see the lunch break after being made to toil with the ball all morning.

  • 117.4

OUT! Caught. Ashwin to Silva. Off break length ball, outside off stump on the front foot defending, bat-pad to short leg, by Dhawan. Roshen Silva's Test debut doesn't last long. Ashwin is clever and tosses it up hoping for some extra turn and bounce. That is exactly what happens and that produces the edge onto the pad which balloons to short leg.

  • 116.4

OUT! Caught. Sharma to Samarawickrama. Back of a length, outside off stump on the back foot pushing, outside edge to wicketkeeper, by Saha. What a catch from Saha! The edge is flying low and dipping but he produces a wonderful full length dive and grabs the ball in his right hand. That will lift the crowd and the players.

APPEAL! Verified by umpire after REFERRAL. Perera to Kohli. Off break length ball, off stump on the front foot defending, inside edge for no runs, appeal made for L.B.W. What looked like a good shout initially but the replays back up the umpire's decision. A big inside edge just before the ball hits the pad which has saved Kohli. The crowd are obviously delighted.

That is 402 for India off 599 balls.

OUT! Caught. Ashwin to Mathews. Off break length ball, middle stump on the front foot defending, outside edge to wicketkeeper, by Saha. Goes on with the arm and takes the edge. Mathews was playing for turn but there was none. Fine edge and the ball sticks in the gloves of Saha. India finally get the breakthrough they have been searching for.

  • 88.5

Dropped Catch! FOUR! Jadeja to Mathews. Stock length ball, outside off stump on the front foot driving, mis-timed in the air under control past long off for 4 runs. Another life for Mathews. He doesn't connect as cleanly as he would have liked which gave the fielder a chance. Unfortunately the fielder didn't time his jump and the ball goes through his fingertips.

  • 87.3

That is 51 for Roshen Silva off 105 balls.

  • 87.3

OUT! Stumped. Sandakan to Rahane. Googly length ball, outside off stump on the front foot pushing, missed to wicketkeeper, by Dickwella. After sitting around for a long time Rahane falls cheaply after facing only five deliveries. It was the googly once again which has made the batsman stretch and fall out of their crease. Dickwella is like lightning behind the stumps.

  • 85.6

OUT! Stumped. Sandakan to Vijay. Googly length ball, outside off stump on the front foot defending, missed to wicketkeeper, by Dickwella. Finally a Sri Lankan wicket. The change in angle has worked for Sandakan as he finds prodigous turn away from Vijay. The batsman has overbalanced and his foot just slides out for long enough to enable Dickwella to whip off the bails. Quick work from the keeper at the end of a long day.

  • 81.1

Dropped Catch! NEW BALL. Sharma to Mathews. Back of a length, outside off stump on the back foot pushing, outside edge in the air uncontrolled to slips for 1 run, dropped catch by Sharma. The third time Angelo Mathews has been dropped at second slip and all by different fielders. I hope he has a lottery ticket.

  • 80.6

APPEAL! Sharma to Dickwella. Length ball, outside off stump on the front foot defending, hit pad for no runs, appeal made for L.B.W.

Sharp appeal but the extra bounce with the new ball is taking it over the stumps. Sri Lanka have remained firm and lost just the one wicket in that session although Dhananjaya had to retire hurt. He was batting superbly as well ending up with 119 while the debutant Roshen Silva added some useful resistance at the other end. India seemed to run out of ideas but they will have fresh bowlers and a new cherry to use after tea which could bring a cluster of wickets. See you then.

  • 80.1

That is 201 for Sri Lanka off 483 balls.

  • 76.4

Dropped Catch! FOUR! Jadeja to Mathews. Stock length ball, outside off stump on the front foot defending, outside edge past third man for 4 runs, dropped catch by Saha. Fired in a touch flatter and along with turn the ball keeps slightly low. Mathews feathers an edge but because the ball hasn't got up it goes straight through the legs of Saha.

  • 74.5

APPEAL! de Silva to Vijay. Off break length ball, down leg side on the front foot reverse sweeping, hit body to leg gully for no runs, by Dickwella, appeal made for Caught A touch of excitement from the fielders in close. Nothing but pad though.

  • 74.3

That is 200 for Sri Lanka off 448 balls.

  • 73.4

APPEAL! Verified by umpire after REFERRAL. Ashwin to Chandimal. Off break length ball, outside off stump on the front foot working, hit pad for no runs, appeal made for L.B.W. Review from India but on first look it seems to be spinning down the legside. This is backed up by Hawk-Eye so India lose their first review.

  • 72.6

That is 300 for India off 441 balls.

  • 71.4

APPEAL! Sandakan to Vijay. Chinaman length ball, to leg on the front foot working, hit pad for no runs, appeal made for L.B.W. Much straighter this time but Sri Lanka have taken too long in taken the review. It doesn't matter though as the ball isn't hitting enough of the leg stump to get overturned.

  • 68.2

Dropped Catch! Ashwin to de Silva. Off break length ball, off stump down the track driving, well timed to mid on for no runs, dropped catch by Ashwin, fielded by Kohli. Tough chance for the bowler. The batsman has drilled the ball back at him and stings the hand. Still goes down as a chance though.

  • 65.4

That is 102 for Dhananjaya de Silva off 188 balls.

  • 64.5

That is 51 for Dinesh Chandimal off 145 balls.

  • 63.1

APPEAL! Verified by umpire after REFERRAL. Perera to Kohli. Off break length ball, down leg side on the front foot working, hit pad for no runs, appeal made for L.B.W. Hopeful from the Sri Lankans. Half of the team wanted LBW and the rest were after the catch. In the end neither were right with the ball pitching outside leg stump.

  • 61.1

That is 100 for Virat Kohli off 110 balls.

  • 55.2

That is 100 for Murali Vijay off 163 balls.

  • 54.6

OUT! Bowled. Ashwin to Chandimal. Off break length ball, outside off stump down the track working, missed. Got him. Chandimal tries to use his feet and hit with the spin but he is beaten by the turn on the inside. The ball clips the off stump and India finally get the breakthrough.

  • 52.2

That is 50 for Rohit Sharma off 50 balls.

  • 52.1

APPEAL! Gamage to Sharma. Off cutter short, outside off stump on the back foot cutting, to deep backward point for 2 runs, fielded by Karunaratne, by Dickwella, appeal made for Run Out Quick couple and Rohit is home very comfortably.

  • 50.4

OUT! Caught. Gamage to Kohli. Length ball, outside off stump on the front foot driving, mis-timed in the air uncontrolled to deep mid wicket, by Lakmal. Sri Lanka finally stop the Kohli-train. He seemed to be undone by the ball sticking in the wicket and he was through the shot too early. It skews off the bat and flies towards midwicket where Lakmal takes a solid catch running around.

  • 49.6

That is 50 for Virat Kohli off 55 balls.

  • 46.3

That is 201 for India off 281 balls.

  • 46.2

Dropped Catch! Lakmal to Sharma. Short, outside off stump on the back foot pulling, well timed in the air under control to deep backward square leg for 1 run, dropped catch by Samarawickrama, run save by Samarawickrama. What an effort from Sadeera. He leaps like a salmon and even though he got his hand to it, had he taken the catch it would have been the catch of the century. Outstanding work from the young man.

  • 44.6

That is 200 for India off 273 balls.

  • 43.4

APPEAL! Jadeja to Chandimal. Stock length ball, to leg on the front foot defending, missed to silly point for no runs, fielded by Saha, appeal made for Bowled Can you believe it? Jadeja's first wicket was a no-ball which wasn't picked up but this time it's sent upstairs and he's over-stepped. Chandimal has a life.

  • 38.4

That is 100 for Sri Lanka off 232 balls.

  • 36.2

That is 51 for Virat Kohli off 52 balls.

  • 35.2

OUT! Stumped. Sandakan to Dhawan. Chinaman length ball, down leg side down the track Slog, missed to wicketkeeper, by Dickwella. Superb delivery from Sandakan. He draws out the batsman and rips it from outside the leg stump past a flashing blade. Simple stumping for Dickwella in the end.

  • 34.2

That is 53 for Dhananjaya de Silva off 92 balls.

  • 33.2

That is 50 for Shikhar Dhawan off 83 balls.

  • 30.6

OUT! Caught. De Silva to Pujara. Off break length ball, middle stump on the front foot Steer, outside edge to slips, by Mathews. Pujara goes for 49. Dhananjaya uses the natural variation of the ball which slides on and gets the edge. The batsman is furious with himself but it brings the double centurion to the crease so the crowd are ecstatic.

  • 30.2

That is 101 for India off 184 balls.

  • 28.3

That is 101 for Sri Lanka off 172 balls.

  • 27.3

That is 50 for Angelo Mathews off 72 balls.

  • 26.2

That is 51 for Murali Vijay off 67 balls.

  • 24.2

APPEAL! Verified by umpire after REFERRAL. Perera to Pujara. Off break length ball, off stump on the front foot defending, hit pad for no runs, appeal made for L.B.W. Hopeful from Sri Lanka. Dilruwan needs to spin the ball back a long way from around the wicket to get an LBW. It doesn't quite happen enough so umpire's call on impact and would be missing the stumps.

  • 23.5

That is 101 for India off 144 balls.

  • 21.6

OUT! Caught. Jadeja to Mathews. Stock length ball, outside off stump on the front foot pushing, outside edge to slips, by Rahane. Quite loose from the former Sri Lankan captain. It was wide enough to leave but the previous deliveries have been coming into Mathews which makes him play. This time turn and bounce. Brilliant bowling from a top class spinner.

  • 20.2

OUT! Caught. Gamage to Pujara. Length ball, outside off stump on the front foot glancing, mis-timed to leg slip, by Samarawickrama. The plan has worked for Sri Lanka. Pujara fails to keep down the ball as he clips it off his hip. That could not have worked out any better with leg slip taking a fine catch.

  • 18.4

OUT! L.B.W. NOT OUT changed by umpire to OUT after REFERRAL. Jadeja to Perera. Stock ball back of a length, outside off stump down the track defending, hit pad. Brilliant decision to review. Dilruwan had been getting down the track but each time the umpire has said not out because of how far he is down. Kohli though decides this time could be closer and he is right. Three red lights on Hawk-Eye and India have their third.

  • 17.5

APPEAL! Perera to Pujara. Off break length ball, outside off stump on the front foot defending, hit pad for no runs, appeal made for L.B.W. Close shout for LBW. Perera has drawn Pujara forward and got the ball to turn past the bat. Hawk-Eye though is suggesting that the ball would be missing the stumps.

  • 15.4

OUT! Bowled. Jadeja to Lakmal. Stock ball half volley, off stump on the front foot defending, bottom edge. The nightwatchman doesn't last too long. Jadeja skids the ball under the forward defense from Lakmal and clatters off stump. The bowler doesn't even realise he has bowled him.

  • 15.1

OUT! Caught. Jadeja to Karunaratne. Stock length ball, outside off stump on the front foot defending, outside edge to wicketkeeper, by Saha. Thin edge and Karunaratne has to go. A gentle prod forward and the ball doesn't spin as much as the opener was expecting. India have been unrelenting this session with the ball.

  • 13.4

OUT! Caught. Perera to Rahane. Off break length ball, outside off stump down the track driving, mis-timed in the air uncontrolled to long on, by Sandakan. Rahane is finally put out of his misery. The whole innings was a struggle for him and in the end he tried to hit himself into some form. This didn't work as the bat skewed in his hand and he picked out long on.

  • 9.6

OUT! Caught. Perera to Dhawan. Off break length ball, middle stump on the front foot sweeping, top edge in the air uncontrolled to fine leg, by Lakmal. Sri Lanka needed that. Dhawan has given it away after looking so comfortable on a flat deck. It was very early to play the sweep and Dhawan hasn't got over the top which produces the top edge out into the deep. While the ball is in the air Lakmal is trying to get himself into position but somehow loses his shoe in the process. The fielders can have a laugh about it now as the catch is taken.

  • 9.3

APPEAL! OUT changed by umpire to NOT OUT after REFERRAL. Jadeja to de Silva. Stock length ball, outside off stump on the front foot defending, inside edge for no runs, appeal made for L.B.W. Good review from Sri Lanka. Tickles the inside the edge just before cannoning into the pad. Dhananjaya is safe.

  • 9.3

Dropped Catch! Sharma to Mathews. Back of a length, outside off stump on the back foot defending, outside edge to slips for no runs, dropped catch by Kohli. This time it's the captain who spills the catch at second slip. They have both been relatively simple catches.

  • 8.6

APPEAL! Verified by umpire after REFERRAL. Perera to Rahane. Off break back of a length, outside off stump on the back foot working, hit pad for no runs, appeal made for L.B.W. Rahane survives again. Shorter length so he goes onto the back foot but the ball stays a touch low and spins sharply. He is struck on the pad though it looks to be going down. Hawk-Eye shows the ball clipping the leg stump so Sri Lanka don't lose a review.

  • 6.6

Dropped Catch! Shami to Perera. Length ball, outside off stump on the front foot driving, outside edge to slips for no runs, dropped catch by Dhawan. Easy catch put down at second slip by Shikhar. And to make matters worse the ball pops out of the hands and into the hemlet. Five penalty runs.

  • 5.5

OUT! Caught. Verified by umpire after REFERRAL. Shami to Samarawickrama. Seaming in bouncer, outside off stump swayed away Fended, Gloved in the air uncontrolled to gully, by Rahane. What an absolute ripper from Shami. A searing bouncer which follows Samarawickrama and all he can do is try and take evasive action. It brushes the glove before hitting the arm and the ball gently lobs up to gully. Sri Lanka lose their first review.

  • 5.1

OUT! L.B.W. Sharma to de Silva. Seaming in length ball, outside off stump no foot movement defending, hit pad. The feet got stuck on the crease and with the ball nipping back in Dhananjaya was always in trouble. Sri Lanka need to try and get to tea without losing another wicket because at the minute India and the crowd are fired up.

  • 4.2

APPEAL! OUT changed by umpire to NOT OUT after REFERRAL. Lakmal to Rahane. Seaming in length ball, outside off stump on the front foot defending, hit pad for no runs, appeal made for L.B.W. A life for Rahane and he will be mightily relieved. He has been under lots of pressure to score runs in the series and has even been given a promotion from the captain. Lakmal traps him on the pad but the movement back in is taking the ball past leg stump.

  • 4.1

APPEAL! Shami to de Silva. Length ball, outside off stump no foot movement defending, hit pad for no runs, appeal made for L.B.W. Very close to LBW. The umpire is suggesting an inside edge but on replay it seems to be the ball hitting both pads.

  • 2.2

APPEAL! Shami to de Silva. Half volley, to leg no foot movement flick, hit pad for no runs, appeal made for L.B.W. Another hopeful appeal from Shami. Much fuller this time but sliding down the legside.

  • 2.1

OUT! Caught. Lakmal to Vijay. Out-swinging length ball, outside off stump on the front foot driving, outside edge to wicketkeeper, by Dickwella. Quality Test match bowling from Lakmal. Putting the ball in the channel with a hint of swing and he finds a thin edge. Vijay won't have played that shot had his team not been in a strong position and in need of quick runs.

  • 2.1

APPEAL! Shami to de Silva. Seaming in length ball, outside off stump no foot movement defending, hit pad for no runs, appeal made for L.B.W. Good pace from Shami and he skids the ball into the pads. Too high though on Hawk-Eye.

  • 0.1

NEW BALL. OUT! Caught. Shami to Karunaratne. Back of a length, outside off stump on the back foot defending, outside edge to wicketkeeper, by Saha. Can you believe it? Shami gets the wicket of Karunaratne first ball. It was put on a good line and length and the batsman had to play at it before a touch of nibble squared him up. A peach of a delivery.
