live commentary

  • Over 33. 5 runs. Bowler: Akila Dananjaya. India: 219/2(rr 6.64)
  • 32.1

FOUR! Akila Dananjaya to Dinesh Karthik. Off break half volley, outside off stump on the front foot driving, well timed in the air under control past deep cover for 4 runs. There we go, an emphatic stroke to complete a comprehensive victory - India seal the series 2-1 and with it their eighth straight ODI series win. They are a juggernaut of a team and even after losing the first match, it was never really in doubt that they would turn things around.

Shikhar Dhawan's sublime 12th ODI century has secured yet another series win for India at home. The left-handed opener clinically cruised to the landmark after sharing a huge partnership with Shreyas Iyer (65) in pursuit of an under par 215. The hosts didn't have it all their own way though, and might have had a few nerves when Sri Lanka got off to a flier first up through Upul Tharanga (95). Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav settled things down for the hosts with three wickets apiece as the visitors fell away badly in a lower order collapse. Attention will now turn to the shortest format as these sides battle it out in a three match T20I series.

  • 32.1

Wide Akila Dananjaya to Dinesh Karthik. Leg spinner back of a length, to leg on the back foot, Left to wicketkeeper for 1 run, fielded by Dickwella.

  • Over 32. 10 runs. Bowler: Asela Gunaratne. India: 214/2(rr 6.69)
  • 31.6

  • 31.5

FOUR! Asela Gunaratne to Shikhar Dhawan. Half volley, down leg side on the front foot sweeping, well timed past deep backward square leg for 4 runs. Wacked to the rope, that's a century for Dhawan. He's made everything look so simple today, he's clearly in sublime form.

That is 100 for Shikhar Dhawan off 87 balls.

  • 31.4

Asela Gunaratne to Shikhar Dhawan. Length ball, outside off stump on the back foot cutting, to backward point for no runs, fielded by Pathirana.

  • 31.3

FOUR! Asela Gunaratne to Shikhar Dhawan. Half volley, to leg on the front foot flick, well timed in the air under control past fine leg for 4 runs. Poor delivery, a rare quick one from Gunaratne so Dhawan just needs to use the pace and pick the gap.

  • 31.2

Asela Gunaratne to Dinesh Karthik. Off cutter back of a length, outside off stump on the back foot driving, to long on for 1 run, fielded by Perera.

  • 31.1

  • 30.6

Angelo Mathews to Dinesh Karthik. Back of a length, outside off stump on the back foot cutting, to deep cover for 1 run, fielded by Tharanga.

  • 30.5

FOUR! Angelo Mathews to Dinesh Karthik. Length ball, outside off stump on the front foot driving, well timed past long off for 4 runs. Creamed through mid off, that was a high class shot but I'm not sure Dhawan enjoyed it too much at the non-striker's end.

  • 30.4

Angelo Mathews to Shikhar Dhawan. Slower length ball, outside off stump on the front foot driving, well timed to deep cover for 1 run, fielded by Gunaratne.

  • 30.3

FOUR! Angelo Mathews to Shikhar Dhawan. Length ball, down leg side on the front foot glancing, well timed past fine leg for 4 runs. Tickled fine, that's easy pickings for Dhawan to move into the 90s.

  • 30.2

Angelo Mathews to Dinesh Karthik. Back of a length, outside off stump on the back foot driving, to deep backward point for 1 run, fielded by Tharanga.

  • 30.1

  • 29.4

FOUR! Danushka Gunathilaka to Shikhar Dhawan. Off break length ball, off stump on the front foot slog sweeping, well timed in the air under control past deep mid wicket for 4 runs. Oh yes, the century is definitely on for Dhawan now as he tucks into some tasty bowling.

  • 29.3

Danushka Gunathilaka to Shikhar Dhawan. Off break back of a length, middle stump on the back foot pulling, to short fine leg for no runs, fielded by Fernando.

  • 29.2

SIX! Danushka Gunathilaka to Shikhar Dhawan. Off break length ball, middle stump down the track driving, well timed in the air under control over deep mid wicket for 6 runs. Wacked into the crowd with nonchalance, Dhawan might just have one eye on three figures here.

  • 29.1

Danushka Gunathilaka to Shikhar Dhawan. Off break back of a length, middle stump on the back foot working, to mid wicket for no runs, fielded by Gunaratne.

  • 28.2

Angelo Mathews to Shikhar Dhawan. Length ball, outside off stump on the front foot sweeping, to deep mid wicket for 1 run, fielded by Gunaratne.

  • 28.1

FOUR! Angelo Mathews to Shikhar Dhawan. Length ball, outside off stump on the front foot Slog, well timed in the air under control past deep backward square leg for 4 runs. Agricultural but effective from Dhawan as he has a massive heave across the line.

  • Over 28. 4 runs. Bowler: Asela Gunaratne. India: 174/2(rr 6.21)
  • 27.6

Asela Gunaratne to Dinesh Karthik. Off cutter length ball, outside off stump on the front foot defending, back to bowler for no runs, fielded by Gunaratne.

  • 26.4

FOUR! Thisara Perera to Shikhar Dhawan. Half volley, to leg on the front foot flick, well timed in the air under control past deep mid wicket for 4 runs. That's in the slot, Dhawan whips it helicopter-MSD-style over mid wicket. He's having fun out there.

  • 26.3

Thisara Perera to Dinesh Karthik. Length ball, outside off stump on the front foot driving, to deep backward point for 1 run, fielded by Perera.

  • 25.3

Asela Gunaratne to Shikhar Dhawan. Half volley, off stump on the front foot driving, to long off for 1 run, fielded by Perera. That's 4000 career ODI runs for Dhawan - he's the second fastest Indian to that mark behind usual skipper Virat Kohli.

  • 25.2

APPEAL! Asela Gunaratne to Shikhar Dhawan. Off cutter full toss, down leg side on the front foot sweeping, hit pad back to bowler for no runs, fielded by Gunaratne, appeal made for L.B.W.

APPEAL! Gunaratne to Dhawan. Off cutter full toss, down leg side on the front foot sweeping, hit pad back to bowler for no runs, fielded by Gunaratne, appeal made for L.B.W.

  • 25.1

Asela Gunaratne to Shikhar Dhawan. Off cutter length ball, off stump on the front foot sweeping, to short fine leg for no runs, fielded by Lakmal.

  • Over 25. 4 runs. Bowler: Thisara Perera. India: 159/2(rr 6.36)
  • 24.6

APPEAL! OUT changed by umpire to NOT OUT after REFERRAL. Thisara Perera to Dinesh Karthik. Length ball, off stump on the front foot flick, inside edge for no runs, appeal made for L.B.W. The finger is raised but Karthik is asking for a review before it even reaches it's apex. It looked plumb to the naked eye but the batsman knew he got a little feather of an inside edge on it, so the decision is overturned.

  • 24.5

Thisara Perera to Dinesh Karthik. Back of a length, outside off stump on the back foot driving, to point for no runs, fielded by Gunathilaka.

  • 24.4

Thisara Perera to Dinesh Karthik. Half volley, outside off stump on the front foot driving, back to bowler for no runs, fielded by Perera.

  • 24.3

Thisara Perera to Dinesh Karthik. Length ball, outside off stump on the front foot driving, back to bowler for no runs, fielded by Perera.

  • 24.2

FOUR! Thisara Perera to Dinesh Karthik. Length ball, off stump on the front foot flick, well timed past deep mid wicket for 4 runs. Lovely stroke, all wrists and whippage from Karthik to open his boundary account.

  • 24.1

Thisara Perera to Dinesh Karthik. Length ball, outside off stump on the front foot driving, to mid off for no runs, fielded by Fernando.

  • Over 24. 4 runs. Bowler: Sachith Pathirana. India: 155/2(rr 6.46)

  • Key events
  • 44.5

OUT! Caught. Kumar to Gunaratne. Length ball, outside off stump no foot movement Steer, outside edge to wicketkeeper, by Dhoni. Safely pouched by Dhoni, Gunaratne wasn't really sure how to play things with the rabbit number eleven at the other end. In the end he has a wafty flirt and nicks one through. From a position of relative dominance, Sri Lanka have meekly subsided to a paltry 215 all out.

With Upul Tharanga smashing the ball to all parts of the ground earlier on, the sky really seemed the limit for Sri Lanka after 20 overs. His rapid century stand with Sadeera Samarawickrama had the hosts in some bother, before a familiar story emerged and the visitors collapsed in a heap. The legspinning-duo of Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal combined to take six wickets between them and rip through the batting order. Once the procession started it had an air of inevitability about it, meaning the hosts require just 216 to seal the series. Sri Lanka will have to produce some magic to prevent that.

  • 40.1

OUT! L.B.W. Pandya to Lakmal. Seaming in length ball, outside off stump no foot movement defending, hit pad. That is as plumb as plumb can be, Lakmal just accepts the decision and walks off with no thoughts of a review. Pandya gets one to hit the seam, jag back and have Lakmal stone dead in front. What a collapse this has been.

  • 39.5

OUT! Bowled. Yadav to Perera. Chinaman yorker, middle stump on the front foot sweeping, missed. Bowled him round the legs, Kuldeep has a big cheeky smile on his face because he was planning for exactly that dismissal. Akila shaped to sweep very early so the left-arm leggie fired in the yorker, scooting underneath the blade and into the base of the stumps. It all rests on Gunaratne's shoulders for the tourists now.

  • 38.4

OUT! Caught. Pandya to Pathirana. Length ball, middle stump on the front foot driving, mis-timed in the air uncontrolled to deep mid wicket, by Chahal. Another one goes, Pandya into the wickets column now as Pathirana is the latest to fall in a soft way. It's an ugly hoik from the left-hander, certainly not what the visitors need in this situation, and Chahal makes the catch over his shoulder look much more simple than it is.

  • 38.2

That is 200 for Sri Lanka off 233 balls.

  • 35.3

APPEAL! Chahal to Pathirana. Leg spinner length ball, off stump on the front foot defending, hit pad to leg gully for no runs, fielded by Karthik, appeal made for L.B.W.

  • 35.1

OUT! L.B.W. Verified by umpire after REFERRAL. Chahal to Perera. Leg spinner length ball, outside off stump on the back foot cutting, hit pad. Sri Lanka really fading away badly now, they are caught in a spin as the leggies run riot. Thisara should know better than shaping to cut when the ball can turn back into him so far, but he does so anyway and is hit on the back pad. He reviews more through hope and desperation than anything else, and it can't save him. India on the charge.

  • 33.5

OUT! Bowled. Chahal to Mathews. Leg spinner length ball, to leg on the front foot defending, missed. Cleans him up with a beauty, Chahal has enjoyed that one and you can't blame him. He goes slightly wider on the crease, fires this into leg stump and gets massive turn to beat the edge and crash into timber. A great time for the hosts to strike and it's the key man Mathews. This pitch is taking prodigious turn now.

  • 31.4

APPEAL! Yadav to Gunaratne. Chinaman length ball, middle stump on the front foot working, Play and Miss (Leg Side) to wicketkeeper for no runs, by Dhoni, appeal made for Stumped

  • 27.5

OUT! Caught. Yadav to Dickwella. Chinaman length ball, off stump no foot movement Steer, outside edge to slips, by Iyer. Guided into the hands of slip, two in the over for Kuldeep as the crowd roars into life. This is a pretty tame shot, it just looked like he was giving catching practice to Iyer who accepted the chance with glee. Dickwella was attempting a repeat of the previous stroke but the ball was flatter, straighter and fuller so therefore frought with danger.

  • 27.1

OUT! Stumped. Yadav to Tharanga. Chinaman length ball, outside off stump on the front foot driving, missed to wicketkeeper, by Dhoni. The change of bowling works a treat straight away, although it seemed a little innocuous at first. Tharanga lazily drove at the ball which turned past his outside edge and Dhoni casually removed the bails. It seemed as though Tharanga wasn't too concerned but the replays show he is marginally out of his crease, so a huge wicket for the hosts as they remove the dangerous opener.

  • 22.4

OUT! Caught. Perera to Iyer. Back of a length, off stump backing away pulling, mis-timed in the air uncontrolled to mid on, by Lakmal. Something to cheer for Sri Lanka, a moment of relief as Iyer skews one to a fielder. He was looking to pull but was cramped for room, and looks absolutely gutted when the ball balloons into the hands of Lakmal.

  • 22.3

OUT! Caught. Chahal to Samarawickrama. Leg spinner length ball, outside off stump on the front foot driving, mis-timed in the air uncontrolled to deep cover, by Dhawan. Taken in the deep, Chahal celebrates a wicket India desperately needed. Sadeera was looking to go more in the extra cover region, but the spin meant the ball skewed off the outer half of the blade and presented a simple chance to the sweeper. That was an impressive cameo but isn't the sort of innings that will win matches, especially against India on a belting track. Mathews strides out to the middle, full of confidence after a century in the previous match.

  • 19.5

APPEAL! Yadav to Samarawickrama. Chinaman length ball, to leg on the back foot pushing, to backward point for no runs, fielded by Chahal, appeal made for Run Out

  • 19.3

That is 50 for Shikhar Dhawan off 48 balls.

  • 19.2

Dropped Catch! Yadav to Samarawickrama. Chinaman length ball, to leg down the track flick, in the air uncontrolled to mid wicket for 1 run, dropped catch by Karthik. A chance goes begging, India really needed that to stick. Karthik was at full stretch and could only tip it over the crossbar goalkeeper style as Sadeera had made decent contact.

  • 17.2

That is 100 for India off 106 balls.

  • 17.2

That is 100 for Sri Lanka off 104 balls.

  • 15.2

That is 50 for Shreyas Iyer off 44 balls.

  • 13.5

APPEAL! Yadav to Samarawickrama. Googly length ball, off stump on the front foot working, hit pad to short leg for no runs, appeal made for L.B.W.

  • 11.6

APPEAL! Verified by umpire after REFERRAL. Pathirana to Iyer. Stock length ball, off stump on the front foot working, hit pad for no runs, appeal made for L.B.W. Huge appeal, Sri Lanka like the look of this so ask to review. There's no spin on offer though so the ball was heading with the angle to miss the leg stump.

  • 11.6

APPEAL! Yadav to Samarawickrama. Chinaman length ball, off stump on the front foot working, hit pad to short leg for no runs, appeal made for L.B.W.

  • 11.5

APPEAL! Pathirana to Iyer. Stock length ball, middle stump on the back foot working, hit pad to silly point for no runs, fielded by Dickwella, appeal made for L.B.W.

  • 11.1

Dropped Catch! FOUR! Pathirana to Iyer. Stock length ball, outside off stump backing away cutting, top edge past third man for 4 runs, dropped catch by Mathews. Oh dear, more woe in the field for the tourists. Iyer looks to make room to cut but can only get a top edge which flies between the hands of Mathews at slip. It flew quickly but he really should've done better.

  • 11.1

That is 50 for Upul Tharanga off 36 balls.

  • 3.4

OUT! Bowled. Perera to Sharma. Googly length ball, off stump on the front foot defending, missed. What a beauty, Rohit is beaten all ends up by the young spinner. For a man in such prime form, he has completely misread this to have his middle peg knocked back. Akila produces the perfect googly to sneak between bat and pad and give the tourists a much needed early scalp.

  • 3.4

OUT! Caught. Bumrah to Gunathilaka. Length ball, to leg down the track driving, mis-timed in the air uncontrolled to mid on, by Sharma. Gobbled at mid on, Gunathilaka can't quite believe what he has done. It's difficult to take on Bumrah and this ball sums up why - the difficult length is almost impossible to get underneath and he can only chip it to the Indian skipper.
