live commentary

  • Over 16. 2 runs. Bowler: Hardik Pandya. Sri Lanka: 87/10(rr 5.44)
  • 15.6

OUT! Caught. Hardik Pandya to Vishwa Fernando. Back of a length, outside off stump on the back foot pushing, mis-timed in the air uncontrolled to backward point, fielded by Unadkat. Tentatively prodded into the hands of point, that is a massive victory for the hosts. In fact it is their largest in this format, 93 runs in the end. Sri Lanka have been humbled in Cuttack.

A rampant India have surged to an imperious victory over a hapless Sri Lanka to kickstart this T20I series with a statement of intent. With the blade in hand they were merciless against anything short, KL Rahul cashing in with a swashbuckling 61 before the icing on the cake was added by MS Dhoni (39) and Manish Pandey (32). The tourists will have hoped the heavy dew would have caused issues for India's two wrist spinners, but instead they wreaked havoc to dismantle the batting order. Yuzvendra Chahal (4/23) and Kuldeep Yadav (2/18) looked like masters at work as they bamboozled top order batsmen with their variations. The visitors managed just six boundaries in total in their innings as they tamely subsided for just 87. They have just two days to try and turn things around before the Second T20I in Indore.

  • 15.5

Hardik Pandya to Vishwa Fernando. Length ball, outside off stump no foot movement pushing, well timed to deep cover for 2 runs, fielded by Sharma.

  • 15.4

OUT! Caught. Hardik Pandya to Dushmantha Chameera. Length ball, off stump on the front foot flick, in the air uncontrolled to deep square leg, by Rahul. Whipped away but there is a man perfectly positioned in the deep, India are now just one wicket from a crushing victory. Pandya can barely believe his luck, he thought that ball was destined for the ropes but Rahul takes a tumbling catch to add to his excellent game.

  • 15.3

Hardik Pandya to Dushmantha Chameera. Back of a length, off stump on the back foot working, hit pad to point for no runs, fielded by Pandey.

  • 15.2

  • 15.1

  • Over 15. 9 runs. Bowler: Jasprit Bumrah. Sri Lanka: 85/8(rr 5.67)
  • 14.6

Jasprit Bumrah to Dushmantha Chameera. Yorker, off stump on the front foot working, to mid wicket for 1 run, fielded by Pandya.

  • 14.5

FOUR! Jasprit Bumrah to Dushmantha Chameera. Full toss, outside off stump on the front foot driving, well timed past deep backward point for 4 runs. Some consolation hitting for the tourists now to gloss over this devastating defeat. Chameera is having some fun out there, this is his best T20I score.

  • 14.4

FOUR! Jasprit Bumrah to Dushmantha Chameera. Length ball, outside off stump on the front foot driving, well timed in the air under control past long off for 4 runs. Bludgeoned down the ground. Amazingly that is only the third boundary four in the entire innings.

  • 14.3

Jasprit Bumrah to Dushmantha Chameera. Length ball, outside off stump on the front foot driving, to mid on for no runs, shy attempt by Yadav.

  • 14.2

  • 14.1

  • Over 14. 5 runs. Bowler: Hardik Pandya. Sri Lanka: 76/8(rr 5.43)
  • 13.6

OUT! Caught & Bowled. Hardik Pandya to Akila Dananjaya. Length ball, to leg backing away driving, back to bowler, by Karthik. Casual brilliance from Pandya, he barely even celebrates but this is a screamer of a catch. Akila swings hard and gets a good piece of it, but Pandya is able to take the reflex grab with nonchalance.

  • 13.6

Wide Hardik Pandya to Akila Dananjaya. Bouncer, down leg side backing away cutting, missed to wicketkeeper for 1 run, fielded by Dhoni.

  • 12.5

Kuldeep Yadav to Akila Dananjaya. Chinaman back of a length, to leg on the back foot working, to deep mid wicket for 1 run, fielded by Pandey.

  • 12.4

OUT! Caught. Kuldeep Yadav to Kusal Perera. Chinaman length ball, off stump down the track Slog, thick edge in the air uncontrolled to wicketkeeper, by Dhoni. Kusal's painstaking innings comes to an end as he skies one extremely high but not very far. Dhoni barely has to move an inch, just look to the heavens and accept the ball into his gloves. Kusal was looking to launch it into next week but got a thick edge instead.

  • 12.3

Kuldeep Yadav to Akila Dananjaya. Googly back of a length, outside off stump on the back foot cutting, well timed to deep backward point for 1 run, fielded by Unadkat.

  • 12.2

  • 11.5

Yuzvendra Chahal to Akila Dananjaya. Leg spinner back of a length, to leg on the back foot working, inside edge to fine leg for 3 runs, run save by Yadav.

  • 11.4

  • 11.3

Yuzvendra Chahal to Kusal Perera. Leg spinner length ball, off stump down the track, hit pad to square leg for no runs, fielded by Dhoni.

  • 11.2

Yuzvendra Chahal to Akila Dananjaya. Leg spinner length ball, outside off stump on the front foot driving, to long on for 1 run, fielded by Karthik.

  • 11.1

OUT! Stumped. Yuzvendra Chahal to Thisara Perera. Googly length ball, outside off stump down the track driving, missed to wicketkeeper, by Dhoni. Another one bites the dust, the procession continues in Cuttack. India are rampant and Chahal is on fire. He tempts the left-hander down the pitch and deceives him with the googly, Dhoni does the rest in a flash.

  • Over 11. 5 runs. Bowler: Kuldeep Yadav. Sri Lanka: 62/5(rr 5.64)
  • 10.6

Kuldeep Yadav to Thisara Perera. Chinaman length ball, to leg on the front foot working, to deep mid wicket for 1 run, fielded by Pandey.

  • 10.3

Kuldeep Yadav to Kusal Perera. Chinaman length ball, down leg side down the track working, to deep mid wicket for 1 run, fielded by Pandey.

  • 10.2

OUT! Caught. Kuldeep Yadav to Dasun Shanaka. Googly length ball, middle stump on the front foot driving, mis-timed in the air uncontrolled to long on, by Pandya. The Sri Lankans have no choice but to keep on swinging hard as the required run rate rockets above 12 an over, but that plays right into the hands of these two wrist spinners. Kuldeep gets in on the wicket action now as Shanaka plinks a googly to long on.

  • 10.1

Kuldeep Yadav to Kusal Perera. Chinaman back of a length, middle stump backing away cutting, to deep backward point for 1 run, fielded by Unadkat.

  • Over 10. 3 runs. Bowler: Yuzvendra Chahal. Sri Lanka: 57/4(rr 5.70)

  • 9.1

Yuzvendra Chahal to Dasun Shanaka. Leg spinner length ball, outside off stump on the front foot driving, to cover for no runs, fielded by Rahul.

  • 9.1

OUT! Stumped. Yuzvendra Chahal to Asela Gunaratne. Leg spinner half volley, to leg on the front foot working, Play and Miss (Leg Side) to wicketkeeper for 1 run, by Dhoni. Even when he fumbles the ball, Dhoni does it in such a cool and calculated way. Gunaratne overbalances as this is fired down leg, and the ball cannons off the keeper's gloves and into the stumps while the batsman is stuck down the pitch. A touch of luck, but everything is going India's way now.

  • Over 9. 5 runs. Bowler: Kuldeep Yadav. Sri Lanka: 54/3(rr 6.00)

  • 7.2

OUT! Caught & Bowled. Yuzvendra Chahal to Angelo Mathews. Leg spinner length ball, middle stump on the front foot pushing, mis-timed in the air uncontrolled back to bowler, fielded by Chahal. The simplest catch you will ever see, Chahal bags another. Mathews was just looking to push this past the bowler for a single but the ball defied the dewy surface to grip slightly and take the outer half of the blade. It pops back to the bowler as Sri Lanka begin to wobble.

  • 7.1

Yuzvendra Chahal to Kusal Perera. Leg spinner length ball, outside off stump on the back foot cutting, to deep cover for 1 run, fielded by Iyer.

  • Key events
  • 14.3

OUT! Bowled. Perera to Rahul. Slower length ball, off stump on the front foot Slog, missed. Cleaned him up, Rahul through the shot way too early and the ball crashes into the furniture. Thisara held that one deep in his hand so it floated out, and the opener was clearly frustrated after the boundaries had dried up. Sri Lanka doing an excellent job at the moment.

  • 12.6

That is 100 for India off 79 balls.

  • 12.4

OUT! Caught. Fernando to Iyer. Back of a length, off stump backing away cutting, top edge to wicketkeeper, by Dickwella. Extra pace and bounce from Pradeep does the trick for the tourists. Iyer was looking to give himself room to slash a cut, but the ball kisses the top edge on the way through to Dickwella. Massive cheers as MSD strides out to the middle.

  • 9.6

That is 50 for Lokesh Rahul off 35 balls.

  • 6.1

APPEAL! OUT changed by umpire to NOT OUT after REFERRAL. Mathews to Rahul. Seaming in length ball, outside off stump on the front foot working, hit pad for no runs, appeal made for L.B.W. Huge shout, Mathews pleads with the umpire who answers in the affirmative. That ball jagged back though and Rahul thinks it might be missing leg, so we have a review. Sure enough, the ball was sneaking down so this will be overturned.

  • 4.6

OUT! Caught. Mathews to Sharma. Length ball, off stump on the front foot Slog, mis-timed in the air uncontrolled to mid on, by Chameera. This is an ugly dismissal, not really befitting of such an attractive batsman as Rohit. He'll be disappointed as he hoiked across the line, the ball taking the splice and looping to mid on who takes an excellent tumbling grab. Joy for Mathews.

  • 4.5

OUT! Caught. Chahal to Tharanga. Leg spinner length ball, down leg side on the front foot sweeping, Gloved to wicketkeeper, by Dhoni. Is there a little feather on that down the legside? The finger goes up and Dhoni throws the ball in celebration, that's a vital breakthrough for the hosts. Tharanga was looking dangerous but Chahal held his nerve.

  • 1.4

OUT! Caught. Unadkat to Dickwella. Off cutter length ball, outside off stump backing away driving, mis-timed in the air uncontrolled to deep cover, by Rahul. That's a tame end for Dickwella, looking to give himself room to clear the ring of fielders on the offside but just scooping the ball to a grateful fielder. The slower ball does the trick for Unadkat, causing the timing to go awry.
