1,783 AIDS cases till date in MP; less than other states
A TOTAL of 1783 AIDS cases have been reported till October last in Madhya Pradesh. The number is quite less compared to other states. Tamil Nadu has 52,036, Maharashtra 13,747 and Andhra Pradesh has 12,349 HIV cases registered, according to an official press release.

Number of diagnosis centres in the State has gone up to 42 and most of the districts have been provided this facility, the release added.
Run by the State AIDS Control Society, the HIV diagnostic centres register HIV cases. In the year 2000, the number of such centres was merely three which increased to 19 in 2002, 31 in 2004 and now has gone up to 42.
Official sources said the State AIDS Control Society is engaged in identifying patients and providing necessary medical advice and treatment to them.
The State Government has opened special centres at Indore and Jabalpur for supply of anti-retroviral medicines and free examination of the patients suffering from AIDS.
Besides, the HIV/AIDS-infected patients are also being supplied free medicines through the district hospitals and medical colleges.
The State AIDS Control Society has so far received Rs 45.16 crore assistance from the World Bank and under DFID head for the purpose since 1998.
Of this, Rs 2.24 crore was allotted to voluntary organisations for carrying out anti-AIDS activities. A total 12 non-government organisations are engaged in executing AIDS Control Programme. With a view to bringing about awareness among youth towards the HIV infection and AIDS, the Society held education programmes for the students of high school-level in the year 2005-06.
