Five smugglers carrying gold inside their body were arrested at the Lal Bahadur Shastri airport here on Tuesday by officials of the department of revenue intelligence (DRI), New Delhi.
The smugglers, who had arrived from Sharjah by a Spicejet flight, were carrying a total of 5.5 kg gold in their intestines concealed in condoms, which was retrieved by medical staff later.
Deputy commissioner of the intelligence bureau was also present at the airport during the operation.
Two inspectors of the DRI, two inspectors of Lal Bahadur Shastri airport and SK Shukla, superintendent of customs department, were also
present at the airport at the time of the arrest.
Those arrested have been identified as Shambhu Yadav, 34, a resident of Bihar and Rohit, Harish Kumar, Yashpal and Rajendra Singh, all residents of Amritsar.
After arrest, the smugglers were immediately taken to the Deen Dayal Hospital district hospital for a complete body scan.
According to reports, after DRI officials got information about the smuggling, a two-member team arrived at the airport on Tuesday morning. At around 7am, the flight arrived from which the smugglers were arrested.
However, even after intensive checking of their luggage the officials could not find the gold. This aroused the suspicion of the officials. They then subjected all five to intensive body scanning at the airport. It was then that they came to know about the gold inside their body.
The smugglers were then brought to the DDU hospital for CT scan and thorough body checkup.
At the hospital, doctors successfully retrieved the gold from their rectum.
A senior doctor said the smugglers had hid the gold in condoms and got it implanted in their small intestines by a special surgical procedure.
