AMU V-C Zameeruddin Shah clears the air on Smriti Irani controversy
Earlier, reports emerged that Irani had allegedly forced the AMU V-C to leave a meeting with Kerala CM Oommen Chandy regarding an AMU centre at Malappuram (Kerala) on January 8, saying that he had not been invited for the meeting.
Days after the news of HRD minister Smriti Irani allegedly insulting Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) vice-chancellor Lt Gen (retd) Zameeruddin Shah took the social media by storm, Shah on Thursday said these reports were “meant to... tarnish the varsity’s image.”
In a statement on Thursday, Shah said “it would take a lot to humiliate a veteran of the Longewala Battle of 1971, who spent the better part of his 40 years in the Army fighting insurgencies and dousing communal passions in various riots.”

However, Shah said he had gone to meet Irani at Chandy’s insistence regarding the funding of an off-campus AMU centre in Kerala.
