The unit would be headed by sub-inspector rank officer with staff and vehicle. Interacting with mediapersons here on Monday, superintendent of police Sumedha Dwivedi said the unit would be operational soon.
She said the unit would focus on sensitive areas of transs giri area. In February 2011, the union ministry had cleared the proposal of the state government for setting up AHTUs in some vulnerable districts, including Sirmaur, to effectively deal with the cases of girls being lured to neighbouring states and forced into human trafficking for money.
The Centre had given its green signal to set up AHTUs in six districts - Shimla, Solan, Sirmaur, Kangra, Chamba and Kullu.
The SP added that the district police was all set to launch a special drive against illegal mining in the bordering area of the district and added that border meetings had been made regular so that interstate criminal activities be prevented.
Reacting upon the increasing theft cases in the district, she claimed that major cases would be unearthed within a week and hinted that some clues had been received.
The SP added that 20 proclaimed offenders had been caught this year and expressed pleasure that strict action was taken against illegal mining and NDPS cases. She appealed people to wear helmets and seat belt while driving vehicles.
14 tractors seized
The Paonta Sahib police on Monday seized 14 tractors while performing illegal mining in Batapul, Bhoppur, Kirpal Sheela and Rampurghat. Deputy superintendent of police Narveer Rathore said a fine of Rs 52,500 had been recovered so far. The DSP said special teams were constituted which raided places vulnerable to illegal mining.
