They may have thought that it would be funny, but creators of the internet's top encyclopaedia Wikipedia were not amused when pranksters changed a few details of famous people that not only made footballer David Beckham into an 18th century Chinese goalkeeper, but also claimed that British PM Tony Blair's middle name was 'Whoop-dee-do'.
Creators of Wikipedia, which employs only three full-time staff but has 1,000 volunteers monitoring the accuracy of information posted on the site, where anyone can make or change an entry, were not too pleased when they found out that the prank, which left Tony Blair with a ridiculous middle name, also claimed that he had posters of Adolf Hitler on his wall as a teenager.
Blair and Beckham were not the only targets, for other fake entries altered Prince Charles' wife's name to 'Cow-miller', and showed that British singer Robbie Williams ate hamsters.
However, founder Jimmy Wales said that the situation was not so bad, for though they had first expected to be overrun by pranks such as these, they had found that most people posted correct information on the site.
"I thought it would be over-run with idiots - but there are far more people doing good than those who try to be harmful," The Sun quoted him, as saying.
