The Bihar unit of the BJP has pitched for Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi as the party’s prime ministerial candidate ahead of the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, adopting a resolution asking the party’s top decision-making body, the central parliamentary board, to announce his name for the position.
At the end of two-day state executive committee meeting of the BJP here on Saturday, former deputy chief minister Sushil Kumar Modi introduced the resolution demanding that Narendra Modi, the party’s campaign committee chief, be named as its PM nominee without any loss of time.
The resolution was seconded by leader of the opposition in the assembly, Nand Kishore Yadav, and adopted unanimously amid sloganeering in support of the Gujarat chief minister.
The resolution says, “People want a ‘majboot’ (strong) and not ‘majboor’ (helpless) government that can lead the country and fulfil the aspirations of the common man.” Praising Modi’s leadership, the resolution says he established Gujarat as a front-running state in the country.
“The son of a poor man who eked out a living by selling tea on the roadside is the natural choice of the people from all walks of life for the post of Prime Minister,” the resolution says.
The Bihar BJP is the party’s first state unit to make a formal demand for Modi as PM candidate.
The state BJP also ruled out the possibility of accepting RJD chief Lalu Prasad’s estranged brother-in-law and Congress leader Sadhu Yadav into the party. “There is no question of taking him into the BJP. Neither has Sadhu Yadav expressed any desire to join the BJP nor has the party made him any offer. So, where is the question of Yadav joining the BJP?” Modi said, reacting to Sadhu Yadav’s meeting with the Gujarat CM in Gandhinagar on Friday.
