The state Congress has again demanded implementation of 73rd amendment while emphasising the need to strengthen the Panchayati Raj system in the state.
Senior Congress leaders, while speaking at a function to mark the birth anniversary of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi, said the 73rd and 74th amendments was the vision late Rajiv Gandhi, who brought power at the doorsteps of the people and the same should be implemented in the state like other parts of the country. The function was organised at the party headquarters on Tuesday.
"The dream of Rajiv Gandhi to fully empower people at the grassroots in villages and urban areas would be fulfilled soon in the state on the pattern of 73rd amendment," said Congress leaders.
The leaders emphasised the need to strengthen the Panchayati Raj system in the state to ensure full empowerment and devolution of powers with accountability as elsewhere in the country.
Party leaders said late Rajiv Gandhi was the architect of Panchayati Raj system and fulfilled the dreams of Mahatma Gandhi in devolving powers of planning to the grassroots level and the country emerged a leader in Information Technology because of the vision of Rajiv Gandhi.
Congress leaders said Rajiv Gandhi also lowered the voting age from 21 years to 18 years in order to ensure that the youth of the country also participate in the electoral system and take lead in politics to serve the nation with young ideas.
Party leadership cautioned the workers about the challenges and designs of communal and divisive forces in the state and asked them to work for strengthening secularism and communal harmony in order to maintain unity and integrity of the state and the country.
The function was presided over by senior vice-president of the state unit and former MP Dharam Pal Sharma. Ex-ministers Mula Ram and RS Chib and general secretary Ravinder Sharma were among those who attended the function.
