A policeman and CRPF jawan were killed in two militant attacks in Anantnag and Shopian districts, respectively, in south Kashmir on Monday. In first incident, militants opened fire outside a special operations group (SOG) camp in Anantnag.
According to a police spokesman, a patrol of police personnel from the Arwami SOG camp came under fire from a close range while they were in a nearby market in Bijbehara area, around 60 km south of Srinagar.
The police have launched a manhunt and are ascertaining the nature of weapons used in the attack. After firing a volley of bullets, the militants immediately fled the spot. A cop, identified as Salamatullah Khan, a resident of Tanghdar in north Kashmir's Uri area, received several bullet injuries. "He died in a hospital," said the spokesman.
Immediately after the attack, security forces cordoned off the area. "No one has been arrested or identified so far," said police sources. No militant outfit has claimed the responsibility for the attack.
A civilian received bullet injuries in the leg and was shifted to a Srinagar hospital.
Militants have been frequently attacking cops in Kashmir this year. The latest attack on the cops has come after two months.
Kashmir inspector general of police Abdul Ghani Mir visited the spot. "He (the slain cop) had either stopped to have tea or water and got separated from the patrol party when militants fired at him. Such an incident had occurred after two months. We will nab the killers," he said. The police figures suggest that 140 to 150 militants are still active in Kashmir valley.
In another militant attack, A CRPF jawan was killed and another injured when militants opened fire at a security deployment in south Kashmir's Shopian district.
Around 6 pm on Monday, militants opened fire at a CRPF deployment near a lane at Awneera area of Shopian, around 50 km away from Srinagar. Preliminary reports suggest that CRPF jawan, who took a volley of bullets, died on the spot. Another CRPF man was injured and shifted to a hospital.
There were unconfirmed reports that militants snatched two weapons -- one carbine and one INSAS rifle, even as police refused to confirm it.
The attack came just metres away from the place where ruling National Conference MLC Showkat Ganai had gone to see a local. The police are investigating if it was an attack on the CRPF patrol or attempt on the life of the MLC.
On July 13, a head constable's throat was slit by suspected militants in the forest area of Hangalpora in Handwara, which is adjacent to Sopore. The cop was on a holiday.
On July 18, two cops were killed in south Kashmir's Pampore area when militants opened fire at Valley's leading cardiologist Dr Sheikh Jalal-ud-Din.
On July 28, militants fired at the special police officer (SPO) in Ontoo Hamam village of Sopore.
Around 14 cops have been killed in militant attacks in the Kashmir Valley this year.
