Two trainee sub-inspectors and their accomplice robbed ornaments worth lakhs of rupees from a jeweller on the Lucknow-Gorakhpur highway. Of the three, only one of the trainees sub-inspectors has been arrested.

According to a police officer, trainee sub-inspectors Kuldeep Kumar Tripathi and Dharmendra Yadav attached to the office of Gonda assistant prosecution officer left for their hometown Shahjanwa in Gorakhpur on July 24 without taking leave from their superiors.

They took a car from their associate Manoj to drive home. Manoj’s brother-in-law Krishna Gopal Awasthi accompanied the two police personnel.

When the trio reached near Katra town, they stopped Lalbabu Soni, a jeweller from Gosainganj in Faizabad district, and forcibly took away the ornaments he was carrying with him. They fled after the robbery.

Soni later informed the Katra police about the incident. He had also noted down the licence plate number of the car in which the culprits were travelling.

Police were able to trace the car to Manoj, but he has absconded, along with Yadav and Awasthi. Only Tripathi was arrested.
