The clash took place after troops of 62-RR laid siege around the village following information that terrorists were hiding there in the wee hours on Saturday.

Police sources said that the terrorists opened fire on troops, when they launched house to house searches to flush out the terrorists, which led to the bloody encounter.

The clash lasted for about three hours during which four soldiers were killed and five others injured. Body of one terrorist was also recovered from the site of encounter.

Defence spokesperson Lt Col AK Mathur confirmed that four soldiers were killed. "Four soldiers and two terrorists have been killed so far," he told the Hindustan Times. However, an official of police station Shopian said that only one body (of a terrorist) was recovered. The slain terrorist has been identified as Saiyar Ahmad Chopian, a resident of Chek Chulen Kulgam. He was reported to be an activist of Harkatul Mujahideen.

Police sources said that the terrorists had earlier been trapped in Harmain village, late on Friday night. "But the terrorists made their escape good under the cover of darkness," said a source. He said that the troops however kept track of the fleeing terrorsist and barricaded them at Nildoora.

Two soldiers and a policeman (SPO) were injured in a separate clash with terrorists at Rampur in Bandipora in north Kashmir on Friday evening. Police sources said that the injured SPO later succumbed to injuries in the hospital.

The condition of the injured soldiers is also stated to be critical. The clash had occurred during a cordon and search operation by the Army in the village late in the evening. The terrorists reportedly escaped without any casualty.

Troops conducted a search operation at Wuyen village near Pampore also. Some gunshots were heard when the troops were laying the cordon of the village, suggesting that terrorists were hiding there. However, no terrorist was nabbed during the daylong search operation.

In a separate incident, a released terrorist of Hizbul Mujahideen, Ghulam Ahmad Parray was shot dead by unknown assailants at Homeshalibugh in Anantnag district on Friday night.
