The indefinite strike called by the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) in support of the demand for Gorkhaland state got off to a violent start on Saturday.

GJM supporters forcibly shut down two hydel projects, tried to set fire to a PWD guest house and torched a panchayat office in Majua, 56 km from Darjeeling town. A GJM supporter who had tried to immolate himself, succumbed to her injuries in Siliguri.

GJM president Bimal Gurung said his party would talk only to the Centre as it was “useless” to talk to the West Bengal government.

Meanwhile, the Karbi Anglong district of Assam continued to burn for the fourth day in a row as supporters of a separate Karbi state went on a rampage. Various government offices were torched and train tracks removed by activists of different organisations.
