The laws governing slaughter of cows, bullocks and buffaloes vary from state to state. Some states like J&K have a 10-year jail term for flouting the ban while many north-eastern states are allowing slaughter of all three.

In most states where there is no ban, the bovines have to be over 10-15 years of age and certified as ‘fit-for-slaughter’.

The data was sourced from department of animal husbandry, dairying and fisheries and ministry of agriculture & farmers welfare.
