EXPRESSING CONCERN over the law and order situation in Varanasi zone, the state’s principal secretary (Home) Satish Kumar Agrawal said the region had not shown any improvement in the law and order as compared to other zones in the state.
“It seems that adequate improvement in maintenance of law and order had not taken place in this zone of police. The required effective measures to check crime had not been initiated,” he said.
The Principal Secretary along with the state’s Director General of Police (DGP) Bua Singh, after reviewing the law and order situation of Varanasi zone of police, was talking to mediapersons at the Police Lines on Tuesday evening.
The government has been fully conscious to check crime and improve the law and order in the state seriously for last one year. After the communal violence in Aligarh recently, the situation was brought under control. Also, the influence of mafiosi in PWD department was checked he claimed.
The principal secretary said, “We plan to visit all seven zones of police in the state to have direct communication with district police chiefs for maintaining law and order in the state. As a part of this campaign, we shared discussions with the district police chiefs of Varanasi zone today.”
He urged supervising police officials to check corruption at the thana level in the interest of common people. “High officials should also do patrolling from time to time to get acquainted with the real picture of law and order”, he added.
Meanwhile, DGP Bua Singh said cops had been given an ultimatum of 15 days to launch a massive campaign against criminals.
He informed that the patrolling on Indo-Nepal border had been intensified with the creation of new posts. Though, no major naxalite incident had taken place in the Purvanchal after the landmine blast at Naughar in Chandauli in 2004, but special attention was being given to naxalite- affected districts —- Chandauli, Mirzapur and Sonebhadra.
The Union Government has sanctioned Rs 50 crore for police modernisation in the state.
The Varanasi zone of police would get 375 vehicles under this assistance, he said adding that it would improve the efficiency of state police.
The district police chiefs of 10 districts falling under the Varanasi zone of police along with the ADG, AC Sharma and DIGs of Azamgarh, Varanasi and Mirzapur attended the meeting.
