Jaya threatens to ban PMK for inciting violence

Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa issued a stringent warning to the PMK saying her government would not hesitate to ban any political party involved in endangering public peace.
While replying to a special calling attention motion by members of various political parties in the Assembly over the continuing violence in the northern districts of the State, she said the government would not hesitate to take action against Pattali Makkal Katchi founder S Ramadoss, his son and former union minister Anbumani Ramadoss and their party if they affected public peace and caused damages to public property. She flayed the PMK leader for his provocative speech that incited violence.
"If any political party acts in a manner that affected public peace, cause damages to public properties, disrupt the law and order and indulge in violence, the government will not hesitate to ban those parties. The government will definitely take stringent action", she added.
She said her government would also file a defamatory suit against Ramadoss for alleging that the government and police were responsible for the violence in several districts.
"Those acting in a manner that affected public tranquility will be detained under the Goondas Act and National Security Act", Jayalalithaa said.
“We will estimate the damages caused to public and private properties by the PMK men and recover the damages from them under the Tamil Nadu Public Properties (damage and loss prevention) Act, 1992.
According to rough estimates, property worth Rs. 600 crore has been damaged in the April 25 violence led by the activists of the PMK who were protesting the arrest of their founder leader S Ramadoss and his son Anbumani Ramdoss, for their inflammatory speeches. The two have since been released on bail.
Jayalalithaa’s threat to ban the party comes after arrest of the father-son duo.
In the state, the two Dravidian formations have kept the PMK at a distance as a result of which it has been out of power for the past 5 years in the state as well as centre.
Only last month, Ramadoss struck a chord with the UP chief minister Akhilesh Singh Yadav, in a bid to support Mulayam Singh Yadav’s call for a non-Congress, non-BJP political formation at the centre.
Soon after his arrest earlier this month, Anbumani said the state government had been rattled by their show of strength and that is why they were threatening to ban his party.
The political reality however is that the PMK, which alternated between AIADMK and DMK earlier, has found itself isolated in the state politics and also drew a blank at the national level. For the past 8 years, the party has been thrown out of the alliance politics with neither of the Dravidian parties giving it any importance.
