In an incident reminiscent of the JNU attack last week, a 26-year-old man shot at and critically injured a 25-year-old woman who spurned his marriage proposal and later attempted suicide in Ghaziabad on Wednesday.
The woman later told the police that the man, Deepak Jatav, had proposed marriage to her which she turned down.
“Deepak was following me for some time and proposed marriage which I refused. He also unsuccessfully tried to convince my father a few days ago. Today, he shot at me from behind when I was approaching my shop. I don’t know what happened after that as I fell down,” the police quoted her as saying.
The incident took place around 4pm on Wednesday when the woman was approaching her grocery shop at Daulatpura area of Ghaziabad.
Jatav, who was following her, arrived with a country-made weapon and fired at her from behind, leaving her critically injured and bleeding.
After shooting at the woman, Jatav fired at his throat in a bid to commit suicide.
“Both were rushed to hospital where the girl was immediately sent to the ICU. The man was rushed to the trauma centre. The condition of both is critical,” a police officer said.
Deepak is a footwear dealer and the victim’s neighbour.
