Bursting of crackers, beating of drums and slogans hailing Sonia reverberated the premises as it became clear that the party was heading for a victory. Carrying placards and cut outs of the Congress President, upbeat party workers called for Sonia Gandhi to become the Prime Minister.

With the party winning all but one of the seven seats in Delhi, winners like Jagdish Tytler led victory processions to the 24, Akbar Road headquarters of the party.

While the celebrations continued outside, senior party leaders Ahmed Patel, Ghulam Nabi Azad and Arjun Singh held meetings with Gandhi to chalk out the future strategy. One of the leaders said Gandhi was cheerful in the wake of election results and accepted greetings by party leaders who met her.

Eight-year-old Sadhana Bharti, who has become a star speaker for the Congress in the campiagn, added to the jubilation by making a speech outside 10 Janpath that it was time for Atal Bihari Vajpayee to resign at the earliest to pave way for Gandhi to take the reins.

A party leader was heard saying they would now have to learn to gesture 'Lal Salaam' implicitly reminding in a lighter vein that it was time to keep the Left parties--which will be extending support to the party--in good humour.

Gandhi will be chairing an informal CWC meeting later in the evening and is expected to brief the media afterwards.
