With reference to the editorial No marks for innovation (February 22), it seems the UGC is going down the quantity over quality path, considering the present state of most of the colleges and state universities. But it is a difficult task to rejuvenate them to accomplish what they were set up to do. The need of the hour is some new universities in the country. Most of the existing universities, and their administration, need major overhauling. There should be more focus on competent human resources instead of erecting more buildings. Good teaching and research should be rewarded instead of encouraging sycophancy and loyalty.

Terror within
APROPOS of the report 20 Naxalites gunned down in Orissa (February 18), it is alleged that some non-governmental organisations and missionaries are getting foreign funds and then diverting these to the Naxalites.
The Naxalites are exploiting our forests and coalmine areas in 12 states with no gain for the locals. About 180 million people live under the shadow of this insurgency. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh rates the Naxal problem higher than terrorism, while Home Minister Shivraj Patil wants special powers to deal with the Maoist violence. The government should take tough measures to control them.

Road rash
Apropos of the report Behind the Blueline mess (February 20), after the loss of so many innocent lives, so many shattered families and so many articles in various newspapers, the killer buses continue to race down the roads of the capital.
This is because of the support from politicians, bureaucrats and traffic police. It is a shame that all are making money on the lives of unfortunate victims. There is no difference between this nexus and that of the kidney kingpin Amit Kumar. The government should take action and save people on Delhi’s roads.
