Policeman killed in Kashmir guerrilla attack

A policeman was killed and a civilian injured when militants opened fire on a security patrol in Anantnag district of south Kashmir today, officials said.

A policeman was killed and a civilian injured when militants opened fire on a security patrol in Anantnag district of south Kashmir today, officials said.

Unidentified militants opened fire on a police patrol party at village Khudwani, 62 kms from Srinagar, around 1pm on Monday, killing a cop – constable Salamatullah, the officials said.

They said a civilian, Sheraz Ahmad Naikoo, was also injured in the the brief shooting and was hospitalised.

The militants escaped from the scene in the face of retaliation, the officials said, adding a hunt has been launched to nab them.

No militant outfit has so far claimed responsibility for the attack.
