Diego Maradona is not one to let go of the spotlight, but he had to share some 24 years ago during the World Cup in Italy.
Argentina reached the final, where it lost 1-0 to West Germany. The Albiceleste’s road to the final, despite uninspiring play during the tournament, was paved by goalkeeper Sergio Goycochea.
Argentina huffed and puffed their way to the final then, almost giving the impression that they were playing for draws only to get into the penalty shootout.
Goycochea got a chance only because Argentina’s first-choice keeper Nery Pumpido got injured during a group match. He made a number of brilliant saves against Brazil, but his standout performances came in the quarters and semis against Yugoslavia and Italy, respectively.
In Brazil, his namesake Sergio Romero has pulled off a similar feat. Romero saved two penalties during the crunch semi-final against the Netherlands. Argentina face Germany in the final on Sunday. It will be interesting to see how he fares against Germany which destroyed Brazil 7-1 in the semi-final.
Romero currently plies his trade for French club Monaco. He earned national coach Alejandro Sabella's confidence despite a lack of regular first team football at his club this season.
