She has headed a variety of portfolios, from womens' health to communications, drug control and public accounts. In 1989 she was elected for her first term in Lok Sabha, and then re-elected for a further 5 terms.

In 1989 she was elected for her first term in Lok Sabha, and then re-elected for a further 5 terms. Born on the 12th April 1943 to Shri Purushotam Neelkanth Sathe and Smt. Usha, Smt. Sumitra Mahajan went on to pursue Law as her chosen profession.  She studied for her MA, LLB at Indore University, Indore  (Madhya Pradesh) before going on to work as a lawyer.  She married Shri Jayant Mahajan in January 1965 and has two sons.
