Recently ordained as a priest, young father Amaro is sent to a small Mexican town called Los Reyes to assist the aging Father Benito, who welcomes him to the parish. Soon after arriving, Father Amaro meets a beautiful 16-year old girl, Amelia, who is soon entangled in a relationship with the young priest.
Father Amaro soon discovers the nexus between the dominant drug lords of the region and the church. The church is also involved in the ongoing guerrilla war in the region.
Meanwhile a jealous ex-suitor of Amelia, who has since become a journalist, writes an article exposing all these transgressions by the church. Though the scandal hits the town, the powerful diocese is able to get the newspaper to print a retraction. With Amelia urging Father Amaro to quit the church and marry her, he has to choose between the divine and the earthly, the right and the wrong.
