The sirens sounded around 1:35 pm (1035 GMT), the fourth time in the day, before the thuds of the explosions. The all clear was given only for another warning of impending danger minutes later.

Defence ministry spokesman Yussif al-Mulla said three missiles had been fired during the back-to-back alerts, but only one had to be shot down, with debris landing in an unpopulated area.

It was the second time on Monday a missile had to be intercepted by Patriot anti-missile missiles, following the first at 1:00 a.m. Monday (2200 GMT Sunday) when an Iraqi missile was shot down by a Patriot over northern Kuwait.

The two other missiles launched Monday afternoon were out of range and Kuwaiti airspace, Mulla said.

Monday's attacks brought to 14 the number of Iraqi missiles fired at the emirate since the start of the US-led war on Iraq on Thursday.
