Tripura goes to polls amid tight security

Polling for two Lok Sabha seats in Tripura began on a peaceful note amidst tight security measures.

Polling for two Lok Sabha seats in Tripura began on Thursday morning on a peaceful note amidst tight security measures following a poll boycott call by banned All Tripura Tiger Force.

People were seen standing in queues to exercise their franchise as polling began at 7 am and there was no report of violence from any part of the state.

Elections are being held in two Lok Sabha constituencies, east Tripura and west Tripura, where 1,976,503 voters would exercise their franchise to make a choice out of a total of 12 candidates.

Director General of Police GM Srivastav said special security measures have been taken in 150 booths located in insurgency-prone areas, which would be aerially monitored to thwart any attempts by the insurgents to disrupt polling.

Border outposts in the state have been put on high alert.

About 20,000 security personnel, including CRPF, Assam Rifles, Tripura State Rifles and state police have been deployed in the state.
