Passersby remained mute spectators to the child’s agony on the highway. Even policemen passing looked the other way.
Many passersby gathered around the hapless Veeru but no one tried to untie him. Human rights activist Mangla Prasad of the People’s Vigilance Committee on Human Rights, who was passing by, also stopped and after much persuasion got local villagers to untie the child.
Two cops on a motorcycle, had earlier stopped for a while but moved on, justifying the ‘punishment’.
Varanasi SSP Ajay Mishra said action would be taken against the woman for thrashing the child and against the policemen for overlooking his plight.
