At least in this one case, police can’t be accused of pandering to the wishes of their political boss.
Uttar Pradesh MLA Luxmi Gautam probably hadn’t imagined such a scenario, but when she “failed to get police assistance” she took on gamblers and ‘satta’ operators on her own.
The Samajwadi Party (SP) MLA from Chandausi in district Moradabad “caught seven persons red-handed” after the raids at different locations, late on Thursday.
“Despite repeated complaints to every level of police, right from Kotwali in-charge to IG, I failed to get any assistance. So, I had to act on my own,” the MLA told HT over phone.
Gautam’s raid party consisted of her gunner, driver and party workers.
And the vehicle of choice?
Scooter. “I wanted to catch them red-handed, therefore, used a scooter instead of my official vehicle,” said Gautam.
Later, Gautam handed over the seven persons and bundles of seized ‘parchis’ (used in satta) to the Kotwali police,
The MLA said she had been receiving complaints from women whose husbands were gambling away their hard-earned money. “They demanded stringent action against satta operators, who have been ruining poor families.”
Refuting charges of inaction, police, however, claimed that stern action had been taken earlier, and that they kept a close watch on these elements. “I can’t say anything about the MLA’s raids but action had been initiated against such people in the past and gangster act was also imposed against a few of them,” said Amar Singh Yadav, circle officer of Chandausi.
