Why had people gathered in Jallianwala Bagh on the fateful day of the massacre?

On 13th April, 1919, when Brigadier-General Reginald Dyer ordered policemen to open fire at unarmed men and women in Jallianwala Bagh, the crowd had congregated there to celebrate the festival of Baisakhi and protest against discriminatory British laws.
