The 23-year-old Russian tourist, who was the victim of an acid attack in Varanasi, has sustained 45% chemical burns with both her eyes being affected.

The woman was attacked on Friday morning by the son of the owner of the paying guest facility in which she was staying. She had allegedly rejected a marriage proposal by the accused earlier.

An extensive ophthalmologic examination, experts said, will determine whether she will recover her eyesight back.

The victim, Darya Yurieva, had been admitted to Sir Sunderlal Hospital at Banaras Hindu University, from where she was shifted to Safdarjung hospital here late on Saturday night. She was flown in from Varanasi in Medanta hospital’s air ambulance.

“She has 45% chemical burns, with facial burns affecting both her eyes, neck, front part of the chest, abdomen, right arm, complete left leg and right thigh,” said Safdarjung hospital spokesperson Poonam Dhanda. The report was submitted by a team of doctors from the burns unit at the hospital, who had examined her right after her arrival at 10:10pm on Saturday.

Patchy burn marks were recorded by the team on her back too. Yurieva has been admitted to the intensive care unit of the burn wing of the hospital.

“Her face, chest, abdomen, back, shoulder, hand and thigh have been affected and she would require several plastic and reconstructive surgeries. It will be difficult to say at this stage how long it will take for her to recover and to what extent. She has suffered deep sulphuric acid burns and each individual’s skin reacts differently to such injuries. It will be at least a week before we get a clear picture on her recovery,” a doctor said.

A nurse said that Yurieva wanted to know whether she would recover completely and whether plastic surgery could help get her original face back, the nurse said. She has told the staff that the attack has shaken her.
