Patel’s 50 came off 32 balls and included six fours and one six. It was his ninth half century in IPL.
On the eve of the match, Patel had said that he was batting well and it won’t take long before he converted the starts he has got in the tournament into big ones. He finally came good on Saturday, scoring his first half-century of this edition to make sure Mumbai Indians got a great start in chasing down Gujarat’s small but tricky total.
Patel started with a boundary from the first ball of the innings off the bowling of Basil Thampi and then never looked back.
He hit another two fours off Faulkner in the second over before taking Irfan Pathan to the cleaners in the third over of the match. The wicketkeeper-batsman hit 16 runs off that over to set himself and Mumbai Indians on their way.
He was eventually dismissed for 70 by James Faulkner.
