Panic gripped the Chandni Chowk metro station area on Friday in central part of Kolkata when a crude bomb went off near a shopping mall on Madan Street. However, no one was injured in the blast.
The bomb disposal members found another bomb similar to one that exploded from the spot. The bomb has been sent for forensic examination.
The entire area was cordoned off and the members of the bomb disposal squad (BDS) conducted a search operation along with the sniffer dogs.
The shopping mall was evacuated, while the cops conducted a search operation inside the mall. However, no one was arrested or detained for questioning.
“Someone kept a crude bomb in the area that exploded. We found another one, which did not explode. A probe has been started,” said DP Singh, deputy commissioner of police, central division.
“The impact of the blast was limited to an area of 20-feet radius. Charcoal and potash were used to make the bomb,” said Pallabkanti Ghosh, joint commissioner of police (Crime) Kolkata Police.
Between 12 and 12.10pm, the locals heard a blast which led to panic in the area. The area is close to Bowbazar police station.
“I was standing near a shop. Suddenly, I heard a loud sound and the area was engulfed in smoke. At first, we thought it was caused by a short circuit as the blast took place under a transformer. But when we went to the spot, we found a broken container of khaini,” said Mohammed Selim, a local.
The police has ruled out any terror links.
