From sending mail to checking your Facebook account to banking, your smartphone enables you to do all that and more.
Now, imagine a scenario where you would also be able to find out the amount of electricity consumption in your home.
This, too, may soon become a possibility as two students of IIT-Kharagpur have developed a smartphone application that would not only help a user know this but also provide him with tips to bring down the consumption.
Arunesh Nandan and Prateek Sinha, the brains behind the application, are now planning to launch it in the market by end of October.
“We are in talks with some of the utility companies in Kolkata who can provide us with the data for electricity consumption by our users. We are expecting to significantly reduce the consumption of the users who opt for ‘Green Energy Reporter’, our application, by at least 20%,” said Sinha.
With this application, one would be able to figure out at what time of the day electricity consumption at one’s home is at its peak.
Then, the user would be provided with tips to reduce the consumption.
“When the user will see that the power consumption is maximum during peak hours, we will advise him to switch off some appliances such as AC and refrigerators. Moreover, we can also provide examples of other users in the local area, on how they efficiently manage their consumption,” said Nandan.
The duo, who plan to go commercial with this application, had also made it to the final round of Acer Incredible Green Contest, a competition that invited environment-centric applications from across the world. That their application competed against 2,100 entries was a major shot in the arm for Nandan and Sinha.
Once the application is launched in the market, the first step for any user would be to download, install it and register.
