Onion jokes inundate cyberspace

Thieves steal five kg onions from a posh South City apartment - no, this is not some breaking news but one of the umpteen jokes shared on social networking site Facebook against the rising onions prices.
Facebook, Twitter, SMS and email - forums of satire on social issues or against statements by political leaders - spared no effort to jump the bandwagon against the pocket pinch with users ruthlessly flaying the rising price of onion and jokes doing the rounds being enjoyed by people of all ages.
“Onion is a basic item for consumption and the rampant price rise is bound to hurt most people. Posting jokes on Facebook is a way of putting the message across and lodging a protest through humour. One thing I have observed is that the prices of onions tend to increase prior to every major election,” said Krishnamurthy Vijayan, managing director of I4L Fund Management and former executive chairman of JP Morgan Asset Management.
Vijayan himself had posted a number of jokes on the onion price rise on his Facebook wall.
The social networking site is flooded with a post asking users to vote, which would reach the 100-mark first among onion, petrol or rupee.
‘Thappad se darr nahi lagta sahab, pyazz se lagta hai’ (I am not afraid of a slap but onions) - read another post that mimKhan’s Dabangg.
Another post - That awkward moment when onion rings are getting costlier than diamond rings - has also gone viral on the Internet.
A cartoon portraying two middle-aged women on the lookout for prospective grooms for one of their daughters finally selecting a guy who buys one kg onion; has also been a hit.
“We have created a parody of Manna Dey’s legeche legeche agun and Kishore Kumar’s jinisher daam bereche, manusher daam komeche on the onion price rise for some news channels,” said cartoonist Ajitesh Kar alias Sentu.
The onion price rise packages on different news channels have become major hits.
While Facebook is abuzz with jokes where sisters would love to tie rakhis with onion atop it on their brothers’ wrists or brothers willing to gift onions to their sisters; one-liners have also become a rage in the virtual world.
“The Lays cream and onion flavour is gonna be just cream”, “Waiting for a movie titled Onion Kapda Makaan” after the original movie ‘Roti Kapda Makaan’ and “There are only two kinds of Indians; one who can afford onions and the other who can’t”- are some of the jokes doing the rounds on social networking sites.
Facebook users are also circulating jokes on how politicians are depositing quintals of onions instead of money in their Swiss bank accounts.
Another cartoon where a shopkeeper asks a lady to submit her permanent account number when she goes to buy three kg onions have also received huge likes.
Film critic Tarun Adarsh lauding onions for breaching the 100-rupee mark and hence being declared a superhit has also amused Facebook users.
Another post that says previously people used to have tears in their eyes while chopping onions, but now they would have tears while buying them has also been a big draw.
