Craving a good biryani but fed up of choosing between the usual veg and chicken? Try something different this time – several Mumbai restaurants serve uncommon variations of the rice dish from various parts of India and the world. The good news? There is a lot for vegetarians too!

1 Gucchi biryani
Mirchi and Mime, Powai
Cost: Rs 425

A very popular dish at the restaurant, gucchi biryani is made with morels from Kashmir. These mushrooms have a fleshy texture and so are not overcooked. They are stuffed with paneer and a must-try.

2. Soya chop ki biryani

Cost: Rs 230

Made from soya granules, this one is tasty and healthy. The delicacy is cooked with soya nuggets minced with spices baked in a clay oven. Finished with saffron yoghurt and garnished with brown onions and cashew nuts.

3. Jackfruit biryani

To make this mock-meat biryani, raw jackfruit is cooked with tomato, onions, garam masala and scented rice. It is served with smoked apple raita and boondi. So go ahead, give it a try.

Made with minced mutton, this is a twist to the usual mutton biryani. The food is a must-try for the non-vegetarian biryani lovers.

One of the most popular items on the menu, it comes with a whole cooked crab resting on a bed of rice. Of course you can order yours shelled too. But where’s the fun in that? The restaurant also serves chicken liver biryani.

Another popular seafood version, pomfret biryani is for those who can’t decide if they want to have fish or biryani.

7. Mopla dum biryani

Apopular dish of the Middle East, it is prepared by cooking rice with meat, onions and spices such as cumin seeds, cloves and cinnamon.
