The health and sanitation workers of the Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) have once again been entrusted with the task of collecting food samples from markets and inspecting them for adulteration.
This right had been confiscated from them after the formation of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) three years ago.
However, now the state government has decided to allot the work of sample collection to the LMC once again, following the recommendation by the urban development department that their workforce is trained for such jobs and limiting them to just cleaning of drains and nullahs would be an injustice to their talent and training.
All the food and sanitary inspectors of Lucknow Municipal Corporation would henceforth undergo a threeday training at the FDA office to get acclimatised to the latest techniques in sample collection and new norms set by the FDA.
Both the departments would also decide their area of work within a week.
Nagar Swasthya Adhikari Dr PK Singh said, “Our food and sanitary inspectors were de-motivated when the work of issuing license and checking the quality of food items was taken back from them. They had been doing this work for years and were trained for the work.
We are happy that they have got their work back and this would help in checking any adulteration in food.”
