Shreshtha Thakur, the woman police officer who joined her duty in Bahraich on July 14 after she was transferred from Bulandshahr for standing up to bullying BJP workers there, on Monday said she was ready to take up every challenge as part of her duty.

Replying to a question about her new posting in Mahsi circle asked on mobile messaging application, the 2012-batch provincial police services (PPS) officer told HT, “It is your district and you know better which circle is good or bad but as part of duty I am ready to take up every challenge. I am right and don’t care about anything.”

About the Mahsi circle that is in grip of flood nowadays, Thakur, a DSP rank officer, said she had not yet visited the circle and did not hold any meeting with station officers of her circle. The PPS officer, however, added that she was gathering all necessary information about her circle and will soon hold a meeting with the concerned staff.

Denying the speculation by some people that after joining her duty she went back on leave, the woman cop said she was very much in Bahraich and wanted to ‘talk to all media persons’ but owing to her busy schedule she could not interact with them so far.

Thakur had slapped a fine of Rs 200 on a local BJP worker for not wearing helmet during her posting as circle officer of Sayana in Bulandshahr last month. Reacting against the police action, several BJP leaders gathered at the spot and raised slogans against the police. However, the woman cop stood up against the bullying BJP workers and sent five of them to jail for creating obstacles in discharge of government duty. After a week of the incident, she was transferred to Bahraich following a meeting of party’s 11 MLAs and MP with the chief minister over the issue.
