Boyfriend arrested for abusing girlfriend for using Facebook

A 20-year-old woman got her boyfriend and his friend arrested in Andheri (east) because they hurled abuses at her and also sent her sexually explicit comments after a fight that started over her over Facebook.

The 20-year-old girl, who works in a mall in Andheri, and her 21-year-old boyfriend, a tempo driver, were in a relationship for a few years. The police said her boyfriend was very aggressive with her and had told her that using Facebook was not “permitted” in their religion.

He had called her a “commercial sex worker” after pointing out that she was using Facebook and someone had liked her photo on it. He call her and abused her. He then blocked her number.

The complainant called up her boyfriend’s friend and asked him to tell him (the boyfriend) that she would block her Facebook profile and that it was an old one. But this man abused her too and sent her sexually explicit messages. Incidentally, her boyfriend has a Facebook profile and uses it.

The couple were fighting for four days over this and finally the girl approached MIDC police station on Wednesday. The police summoned the duo, who abused the girl outside the police station.

Finally the girl decided to go ahead with a first information report (FIR). They were booked under Section 509 (Word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code and sent to judicial custody by a magistrate’s court on Thursday.
